Book Description

1 Sep 2006
Made in Japan - these three simple words conjure playful wit, a delight in detail, formal elegance, and graphic energy. Author of the popular "Made in China", Reed Darmon has collected hundreds of images of everyday Japanese design and pop culture ephemera from the past century. Including perfume ads, art deco matchboxes, robot toys, action movie posters, Noh masks, kimono patterns, sumo cards, children's books, household product packages, and much more, the fascinating objects assembled reveal traditional Japanese artistry and techniques as applied to playfully modern design. A stylish object and graphic essay in one, "Made in Japan" is an extraordinary glimpse into the heart of Japanese popular culture.

A fascinating look at pre and post war advertising in Japan. Very nostalgic for those who were there at the time and place. Extremely interesting to see the way different products were viewed then. A delightful little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun 15 Jan 2013

Another of these small Reed Darmon books that give such a nice feel of the country's recent (1920-60s or so) past, using such everyday objects as matchbooks, small inexpensive common ads, circulars and such. Probably the only place we'd get to see these things. Fun to look through.

This book has high quality (though small) reproductions of many cool Japanese products, advertisements, etc. You can cut them out and make nice wall art to satisfy your yen for Japanese sugoi-ness!
