I only discovered the Blue Door series last year. While I have hugely enjoyed "Swish of the Curtain", "Golden Pavements" and "Blue Door Venture", I have to say that Maddy is my least favourite character, and I would not have finished this book if it had not been part of the series.
The author sounds like she is writing from personal experience in the other books (amateur theatre, drama school, rep theatre, TIE tours etc.) but I don't think she knew the first thing about film production when she wrote this, and there is no way any unknown child actress could carry on like a spoilt little madam on a film set and not be fired within minutes. For some reason, Maddie's antics are supposed to be endearing, but maybe that part of things hasn't carried through from the 1940s to today.
But please don't be put off the rest of the series by this book, and please could the rest of the series be published!!! (Yes, I know the final story features Maddy too, but I want to know how the series ends!)
