OK so far 16 Aug 2008

Fun:
Having been a long time devotee of the madden franchise through Nintendo, Megadrive and PS2 I was eargerly awaiting the release of 09.

I decided to get Madden 09 on Wii as the reviews of Madden 09 on PS2 basically said there was little improvement on 08. I admit I was sceptical given some reviews I read on other sites.

First impressions were the graphics are an improvement on PS2, but you should change the visual settings as per the instruction booklet.

I did start to get frustrated with the controls at first, but am getting the hang of it, though still haven't mastered catching. I have tried several minicamps and the Learn Madden function, both of which teach you the basics quite well. The controls will probably mean that the game will never be as easy on All Madden as the PS2, but that isn't a bad thing.

The game moves quicker than the PS2 between plays, thankfully! There is also the option of picking plays by style, ie Inside Run, Outside Run, Short, Medium, Long Passes, Play Action etc. Its a nice change if you know you're in a throwing down and want to see your options. For Madden veterans, don't worry the option to select play by formation is still there. For beginners there is also an even more simplified option of play selection until you learn the ropes.

All the usual suspects are there, historic teams, Franchise mode, Superstar mode etc and I haven't seen too much different yet. I haven't tried the 5 on 5 yet, but it looks more like a "multiplayer with a few pints in you" mode than a serious game.

All in all I'm happy so far and have just started a franchise mode. If after a few days I get sick of the controls, I'll let you know.

For Madden devotees with a wii, its worth a punt, but bear with the controls for a while.

For non-nfl wii fans, this version of Madden is far easier to pick up and learn than any previous version I have played. If you're interested in a sports game that could get incredibly addictive, give this a look.

Not much has changed 20 Jan 2009

Last madden game i owned was madden 2003 for the Xbox. The wii title is a little worse than that one because they have got rid of some features and made this addition more child friendly. This helps if you are new to madden but if you are experienced with it the additional features add little. If you have wii internet this makes up for it. Playing online adds allot of shelf life to this product. For this alone if you like the NFL it's worth a go.

Fun:
This new version of Madden initially had me very excited on first play as it looks far removed from the previously solid but uninspired 07,08 versions.

The player models have a far greater level of detail and the stadiums look to have been rendered at a higher resolution. In addition, the gameplay is far smoother, without the jerkiness of previous wii efforts. A cool new menu system to choose plays via the remote and a "call your shots mode" that acts as a watered down telestrator in-game to direct your players is great.

Problem is, all of these wonderful ideas have been bolted on to a game that is no different in feel to Madden 2004. It uses the same basic engine and has the very same player animations and cut scenes. The use of Madden and Michaels might be preferable to the guys in the 360/ps3 version but this ain't the case when they say the exact same things since 04, with no vocal changes or lines. Such a lack of these changes is not due to wii hardware limitations but down to lazy programming/time constraints to meet deadlines for the new season.

Overall, I feel it is worth buying over the 08 version for the new graphical style and fluid application of the wii controls at last. Online play is also much improved, and I rarely get kicked off due to server troubles. It is not worth buying if you felt that you didn't like previous versions or that you were bored with the lack of new features. These are few and far between, with aged franchise mode, superstar mode failing to excite with the new gimmicky mini-games.
