Format: Hardcover
Flaubert is famous as a stylist, but his search for 'le mot juste' was always motivated, above all, by a desire to be faithful both to emotional truth and to the physical reality of the world around him. Adam Thorpe has been as attentive to language as Flaubert himself. The result is a translation that is unusually vivid and deeply convincing.

This latest translation of Madame Bovary is the 20th attempt to render this masterpiece of French literature into English. It is stylish and the result of meticulous reseach. The introduction is informative and thought provoking and the notes are detailed and add much to the book. The translator Adam Thorpe gives a helpful link to the University of Rouen website where the original manuscript with its many revisions can be viewed, which gives a fascinating insight to the authorial process. Flaubert took five years to write this masterpiece and Adam Thorpe three years to translate it. Their combined creativy makes this edition a memorable read.

Wickedly insightful, each character representing people we know only too well. So glad I re-read it with more experienced eyes.

Found this translation really hard going and lacking in charm. Didn't enjoy the book much as a result which was a shame. We compared 4 translations in our Reading Club and we're fascinated to see how different they were. This one came out worst for sure although it's undoubtedly very worthy and learnéd.
