Book Description

The story of the homesick Italian girl who became the most feared woman in sixteenth-century France...

Product Description

Sullen-eyed and broken-hearted, fourteen-year-old Catherine de' Medici arrives in Marseilles to marry Henry of Orleans, second son of the King of France. On the promise of a dowry fit for a king, Catherine has left her true love in Italy, forced into trading her future for a stake in the French crown.

Amid the glittering fêtes and banquets of the most immoral court in sixteenth-century Europe, the reluctant bride becomes a passionate but unwanted wife. Humiliated and unloved, Catherine spies on Henry and his lover, the infamous Diane de Poitiers. And, tortured by what she sees, Catherine becomes dangerously occupied by a ruthless ambition destined to make her the most despised woman in France: the dream that one day the French crown will be worn be a Medici heir...

first in the trilogy of books about catherine de'medici and starts with her life in florence but due to civil unrest spends most of her childhood in a convent. after her arranged marriage to francis of france she sees her life change. taken away from her italian lover to marry a frenchman who basically didnt give her the time of day unless his mistress diane of poitiers said so, had a great effect on her and leads her down her path of mistrust and revenge and will eventually use her children and anybody else to get what she wants. great read, couldnt put it down as it was easy to read but did provide a lot of historical stuff.

Madame Serpant is about Catherine De medici, queen of France. It's superb and captured the spirit of the French Court. It shows her relationship with her husband, his mistress, her children and Mary Queen Of Scots. Brilliant

Madame Serpent 11 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
For a long time as a teenager, I would not buy Jean Plaidy's books, mistakenly thinking they would be trashy...Plaidy is a residential area by the sea, of Looe, in Cornwall, as is Kellow (Kathleen Kellow). Once I was persuaded to read her books, I was completely intrigued...and learned lots of history. Jean Plaidy lived here in the war years, and used to visit the town each year for many years to visit old friends. Her husband did a lot of research for her. Madame Serpent is a wonderful historical book, one of the first I read. After 55 years I'm re-reading them. Could you beat Jean Plaidy? In my opinion, no.
Have started with the Plantagenets, and will go to the Spanish series.
Pat Parry...Looe, Cornwall.
