`A charming, magical and sweet-filled adventure'
--Primary Times

`It is a very sophisticated book that works on several levels . . . The story is extremely redolent both of Paris and of fairy tales. The author combines them very cleverly. Indeed, it is reminiscent of the magical realism of Angela Carter'
--School Librarian

Review

Praise for Madame Pamplemousse and Her Incredible Edibles: 'Enchanting debut ... witty, warm-hearted and as delectable as one of the dishes it describes, this is as much a hymn to the culinary arts as to the magic of kindness, and is recommended for 6-9s' Amanda Craig, The Times Praise for Madame Pamplemousse and the Enchanted Sweet Shop: 'A charming, magical and sweet-filled adventure' Primary Times 'I love this book because it is extremely fast moving ... When I was reading it I didn't get to sleep till late because I was so hooked in with the magic! At times it's gripping and packed with adventures and at other times it's mysterious and dramatic. Anyone who loves a fantastic drama would thoroughly enjoy this interesting book of revealing secrets. Also when I saw the pictures I fell in love with them!' A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
I don't agree with the last review. I am 8+ and I really liked this one a lot. There is bullying at school and bad dreams and I think its good when it is in books. But the point is Maddy wins through the dark times with the help of her dear, dear friend Madam Pamplmousse and her cool cat Camembert (he is my favourite). So please don't stop Mister Kingfisher. Kids now are wized up to dark stuff and you make it come right, which is what is great and what stories are for.

PS Rupert Kingfisher came to our school which was great to hear a real live children's writer

Deliciously scary 7 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
G.K. Chesterton once wrote that fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten. The Madame Pamplemousse stories are all fairy tales, but this third in the series is about a very real problem: the problem of bullying. And the bullies involved are much scarier than any dragons.

The victim is Madeleine, our heroine, who is being persecuted by Mirabelle, a new girl at her school. Mirabelle is every parent's worst nightmare: someone so popular with her teachers that her bullying goes undetected. Poor Madeleine is also too ashamed to tell anyone about it, especially her closest friends, Madame Pamplemousse and Camembert. So instead, she accepts sweets and sympathy from a kindly seeming lady, Madame Bonbon, who runs a sweet shop nearby. But Madeleine really ought to know that you shouldn't accept sweets from strangers.

I am a huge fan of the Madame Pamplemousse series. This third instalment is somewhat different to the previous two, with more of a real life feel, although there are some deliciously scary moments in Madame Bonbon's magic world. It also features an intriguing interlude in the South of France, where we learn more about Madame Pamplemousse's past. Beautifully illustrated and with the most gorgeous cover, I would strongly recommend it for both children and adults alike.

Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of this series of books. My six year old loved the first two books, and was delighted when the latest arrived (funnily enough at the same time as the third in the also great Ottoline series by Chris Riddell).

On the plus side, it's well written, beautifully presented and nicely illustrated, just as the first two books are. Where it drops points in comparison from the first two books is that it is just too dark for little readers. It deals with bullying and nightmares in quite a bit of detail, along with some fairly unpleasant incidents from one of the character's childhood. Now don't get me wrong, my middle child had already been read Matilda (the Dahl book with some hideous parents and teachers, but done in a very funny way), a couple of Harry Potters, and the Hobbit, so is far from sheltered, but did find parts of this quite frightening.

Reading it aloud, I could see why this was, and the overall tone is pretty dark. It';s still a good read, but I wouldn't plan on revisiting this book in the next couple of years, and it just seems to be aimed at a different type of reader than the first two books (which I would recommend without hesitation).

I hope this helps.
