Well...with a plethora of really good Butterflys' available, this live performance really isnt in competition. Placido Domingos conducting is routine as usual with no particular highlights other than he keeps the performance moving and its in the correct style. Fabio Armaliato isn't offensive, but cant compete with Pinkertons like Bergonzi, Pavarotti, Bjeorling, Tucker and DiStefano. He hits the notes, but its a very muscled voice. But Daniela Dessi is quite good. Its nice to hear a very Italianate Butterfly and while she doesn't have the creamy voice of Gheorghiu she is much, much more effective than Gheorgius rather blah performance. The top can go wiry, but there is much here to enjoy. The sound is good, the orchestra sounds undernourished and didn't Domingo hear that the horns are out of tune. So.......not a first or second choice, but at the price, Dessi is worth hearing.
