Really Good!, 24 Dec 2003
This review is from: Mad Man [DVD] (DVD)
this is a typical slashermovie, which i'm a huge fan of...Ofcourse this movie is based on the succes of "Friday the 13th" but which movie is really original now a days?? The movie begins with a campfire story, about a farmer who graps an axe and murders his wife and children After doing that, he goes to his favorite bar with the bloody axe in his hand and orders a beer...The other locals soon realise that he has murdered his family and they hang him with a rope around his neck...The morning after he is gone! So are the bodies of his wife&children and they have never been found. The legend tells us that if you call his name (MADMAN!), above a whisper, he comes for you and keeps on coming 'till you're dead! One of the campers ofcourse tries to be funny and calls Madman very loud! That's something he will regret... This is the urban legend behind this movie and sets the tone...This is a kind of slasher that's scary and has inventive deadscenes. The caracters are exactly like they're always are...stupid! they go into the woods alone...go into places that a normal person would never go to...But that's the succes of this kind of films. Ofcourse, like a said earlier, there's a lot of ripoff from "Friday the 13th" but if you liked that one, you will also like "Madman" It's one of my favorite slasherfilms of the early 80's So I suggest you go and see this one. Even for a more than 20year old movie, it's still very welldone, the effects are good and the madman is scary!

An almost forgotten classic, 14 Mar 2009
Had "Madman" come out before "Friday the 13th" it would be considered one of the great classichs of the slasher genre. So it is just a very entertaining movie. Admittedly, the story, as other reviewers have pointed out, is not that original, maybe even silly, the acting is not great, you will probably laugh at the make-up of Madman Martz, and the music sounds like someone is just trying out the new synthesizer, but there are some great scares and a number of reasonably inventive kills. Don't expect too much gore, though. What "Madman" is lacking in blood, it more than makes up with its chilling atmosphere, courtesy of dense woods and the old Martz house.
Definitely one of the better 80's slasher films and worth to be added to a true horror film fan's collection. Watch it with the commentary track on - it's just hilarious!

They thought they were alone....., 31 Mar 2008
You know the scene, camp counsellors gather round a campfire telling ghost stories and we get to hear of Madman Marz who killed his wife and children with an axe before he was lynched by the townsfolk. Saying his name aloud is supposed to make him appear and boy does he, working his way through the cast with his axe, rope, a car bonnet etc.
It has dated and one scene in particular, the well lit Gaylen Ross hot-tub scene, does show some vertical scratch lines. There may be others but they would be masked as most of the film is quite dark.
It is by no means a classic of the slasher genre but is definitely worth watching and is certainly not a dud.
The commentary by writer/director Joe Giannone, producer Gary Sales, actor Tony Fish and the Madman himself Paul Ehlers does rescue it. It is very informative and well worth listening to, what might have happened to the movie if they had got Vincent Price? This commentary gives it a head up on the 3 stars the movie alone would have deserved.
