Superb as always 24 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
I have read all of Polly Evans' books before this one, and I'm glad to say this was not a disappointment. She has kept her same sense of humour, which I think she may have relied upon when you read the adventures in this book.
Taking on the job of a musher in the Yukon Territory would probably not be something many of us would dream of doing - until you read this book. She manages to make even the most depressing parts of her trip appealing -from temperatures of minus 40C to cleaning up poo from over 100 dogs - and as usual she mixes all this with an informative history of the area she tours.

I really enjoyed this! 14 April 2009

This is a great little book that takes you out on the dogsled trail with the author and lets you see an wild cold area of Canada and a way of life that you can experience from a warm comfy reading position! I loved it and I recommend it.

as inverterate traveller Polly Evans spends 11 weeks in a Yukon winter learning to race sled dogs. Great descriptions, interwoven with the history of the area. But the book is about the wilderness and I found it a bit unbalanced in the treatment of the animals. Polly blithely feeds horse meat to the sled dogs and there is only a brief mention of the suffering of the dogs in the racing, the help sled dogs action coalition gives details. Personally I preferred Dorian Amos' books, The Good Life and The Good Life Gets Better, who emigrates there with his wife, and learned to know it well. They also both learn about themselves through grappling with the wilderness which to me, makes a more interesting travel account. I describe it, as well as other stories, it in my book Travelling Magically: How to Turn Your Journey into a Life-changing Experience
