SUB STANDARD 1 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD
The years 1985 to 1993 ( following the release of `Huntington Beech`) were wilderness years for me as far as the Subs were concerned, as they experimented with non-punk musical styles. This was the absolute nadir, and must have led to their record sales taking a real nose dive, as potential buyers decided to keep hold of their hard earned cash rather than risk buying something like this again. I suppose the album is OK in its own terms, but it`s just not even remotely punk, and that`s what we all got into the Subs for right?

The first half is mid-tempo metal tinged rock, while the second consists of a bunch of blues covers. What on eath possesed them to record this? They even largly ignored it at gigs of the time, playing only ( as far as I recall ) `Walk Like a Zombie`, `Pills` and `Saints and Sinners`.

The good news is that the next album `Normal Services` resumed was a stunning return to form, followed by a whole bunch of other first rate punk rock albums.
