Product Description

CD Description

Some call him a genius, others claim he's certifiably insane, a madman, but one thing cannot e disputed and that is Lee Perry is a towering figure in reggae - a producer, mixer, and songwriter who, along with King Tubby, helped shape the sound of dub and made reggae music such a powerful part of the pop music world. In terms of musical quality, you couldn't do much better than this collection. It's just about as good an encapsulation of the art of super-producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, the Upsetters, as you'll find. Originally issued in the mid-seventies on the Creole label, this album finds Perry at the peak of his powers, taking classic songs as Ricky & Bunny's "Bush Weed Corn Trash" and subjecting them to the deconstructionist rigors of dub - the sound careening wwildly between the left and right channels, bass and drums dropping out suddenloy, leaving only guitar snippets of sung vocals, while Perry adds his own apocalyptic imprecations and off-the-wall witticisms on top. What makes these tracks so powerful is the juxtaposition of Perry's insane production approach with the Upsetters' utterly rock-solid grooves.

barrel scrapers dub 16 May 2010
Having purchased virtually everything i've ever come across Upsetter wise over a period of about 30 years, its only natural that with the bogus pirated material marketed every so often in the upsetters name, some of it winds its way into the dustbin. Nevermind, theres enough great music around to make up for this. I would include in this a large percentage of his post Black ark material - an underated but often brilliant sub category to his confusing and vast discography. So why cant I necessarily chuck this horrifically packaged item of dubious content in the pedal bin? Despite some of this material being renamed from other sources, for instance 1975's' Revolution dub' album, and some sounding like out takes from 1990's 'Lord god music' collaboration with Niney the observer, a few of the tracks in the second half rock- in that peculiarly engaging 'mental ward word salad' way Scratch does so well...so, despite another overpriced load of old cobblers essentially off the 'cutting room floor', I'll stick this one over there in the pile marked 'what could have been', and thank the lord god music that its far smaller than the pile marked 'heavenly churchical order', still some of the greatest vibes for sale that this reviewer has managed to collect up!

This album by perry is good. Catchy rhythms and always love to hear Perry's lyrics, they're always genius. This hold to me as one of my favorite Perry albums. Very happy I bought it.

No one loves Lee Scratch Perry as much as I do, so I pre-ordered this CD with high hopes. Too bad. I'm forced to say: Buyer Beware. I'm sure it's no fault of the GREAT Lee Scratch Perry, but this CD is bloody awful, not even close to Mr. Perry's other fantastic dub CDS...this one has poor production quality, is boring, and has wayyyyyyyyy wayyyyyyyy wayyyyyyyy too many vocals to be considered dub-reggae. BUYER BEWARE! I, a lover of Lee Scratch Perry, actually hurled this CD in the trash.
