It's nice that they are finally releasing complete seasons of Mad About You after all these years. It was always a rather pleasant and inoffensive sitcom - not as quirky as Seinfeld but thankfully much less silly (and less irritating) than Friends. Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt worked very well together and they had some good scripts and a generally good supporting cast. It was entertaining without being a classic.

Unfortunately, the fifth season is where it started to go downhill (actually the decline began at the end of Season Four) and the main reason for this is Jamie's pregnancy. How many good sitcoms have been ruined by the decision to have the leading characters have a baby? Sentimentality inevitably replaces wackiness and too many serious moments steadily creep in. There are some good episodes here and there with the unquestioned highlights being the appearances of Mel Brooks and Bruce Willis. But it is definitely not as good as the earlier series. And I definitely will not bother with Season Six when they actually have the baby and the sugar really starts to flow.

I still think the best one in the show is Murray.

My wife loves this show. She has for a very long time, since before we started going out. I would catch her watching it and I would roll my eyes. Then, one Christmas, I decided to get her a boxset and found that like so many other popular US shows we couldn't get them over here. So I've started getting her one a year. At first I would stick in my headphones and find something to read but it's started to get under my skin. If you ignore the copious levels of rom com cheese and the sickeningly smug cameos that flood this show it's actually pretty good. It has moments when its sincere, when its strange and its got a point. Sure, it throws it all away with in jokes and over the top drama at times, but still it's not bad. It's laugh. Unless my wife asks. In which case I'd rather watch something else. (Worryingly I think this whole thing fits with the message of the show. Darn.)

Thank God that Shout! Factory acquired the rights!!! 1 Oct. 2010

Sony released the first three seasons. Season 3 was released nearly four years after the release of Season 2. On February 22, 2010, Shout! Factory acquired the rights to release the remaining seasons. They released the fourth season on June 29, 2010. Instead of waiting four years, they're releasing Season 5 on November 2, 2010.

For those of us who have waited years and years for this to happen, thank you! Sony really missed out. As another reviewer said, every piece of rubbish from 40 - 50 years ago has been released, but an award-winning series with an Oscar-winning actress was shelved.

Please, Shout! Factory, release Seasons 6 and 7! Thank you!

Season 5 Review 26 Feb. 2013

Great to finally have this on DVD. The picture quality isn't the greatest and there's not a whole lot o' special features; however, it's a must for Mad About You fans.

Packaging was great, DVD's worked fine, and it was shipped promptly. I can't wait to get the final seasons to complete my collection.

Enjoyed seeing Season 5 again 7 Dec. 2010

Even though the show sort of jumped the shark with the birth of the baby, it was fun to see many of the pregnancy episodes again like chosing the doctor, the one where they tell everyone, the great crib fight, and of course the birth-I am a sucker for those sentimental kind of episodes. I did not notice the poor quality that some have reported on some scenes perhaps because I watch on a wall mounted tv. I am just happy that Shout is finally putting out the rest of the Mad About You seasons so I can collect the complete set. I did notice that commentary seems to be limited to what they did for the compilation CD (of all the seasons) that was done a long time ago. For that and possible blurring I give this four stars instead of five.

One of the best TV comedy series ever. I own all the 1st five years and hope to see series 6 & 7 released soon. This series is both funny and you can actually believe they are a happily married couple.
