Product Description

Product Description

This volume is an invitation into the world of close-up photography. The topics covered in the book range from technical advice about the equipment needed to get started (cameras, lenses, film), lighting techniques (flash versus natural light) and accessories to use as your experience progresses or situations arise that demand them (filters, tripods and protective gear for both you and your equipment). The book addresses in detail questions of focus, lighting and exposure. It not only discusses simple solutions and techniques for capturing images, but it also gives advice on aesthetic issues such as composition and colour. Apart from the technical advice, the volume presents images capturing the exquisite detail of flora and fauna: flowers brimming with nectar, the intricate pattern of a butterfly's wings and the eye of a gecko, among many more. The book closes with a discussion of a further photographic frontier for future exploration - microphotography.

An excellent read 28 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a good book. It was my first specialised macro book, and I got it mainly because of the quality of the photos. The book covers a range of topics including lighting, exposure, composition and equipment.

The book is great for inspiration too. As well as providing technical details about the photographs they often provide you with diagrams or photos of the setup used. I find this useful as it gives me ideas of techniques to try .

If you are after a more technical approach, John Shaw's "Close-ups in Nature" is probably a better bet, and in fact it makes an ideal partner to this book.

To conclude, this book is a great introduction to macro photography. It is well written and inspirational - a great buy!

Inspiring 6 Aug 2005
Format:Paperback
An absolutly wonderfull book. The photos make you want to go out straight away and click and click again.
The text can be quite technical and a little hard to follow at first, but it does provide a real understanding of the science of macro (and indeed any) photography.
The book is the best work on the subject I have read, it is very well printed and well worth the money.
If you enjoy insects, flowers and all the smaller things in nature you will love this book.

This book is a must read for all persons such as myself who have just spent a great deal of money on a specialist macro lens and would now like the knowledge to get the most from it.

I feel inspired by the images and I really can't wait to get out and about in an attempt at emulating some of them, disapointment is for sure as the images really are superb and well beyond my capabilities, ( for now I hope )

The text is clear and concise and explains all of the aspects related to the subject of macro photography well without boring you senseless.

I need to look no further for any other book regarding macro photography as this one has ticked all the boxes with a very large red pen, it really is a must have.

It's just a pity it's not a hardback as I can see it getting a great deal of use.
