Product Description

Product Description

Sure, you can use Flash MX 2004 without being a master programmer, but as any Flash developer worth his or her salt will tell you, you're not tapping all of its power unless you're taking advantage of its scripting language "ActionScript 2.0" which offers a more robust programming model and better object-oriented programming support than ever before. Here to take the fear factor out of learning it are Flash veterans and best-selling authors Derek Franklin and Jobe Makar, who demonstrate that scripting is an instinctual process you already know by translating real-life activities into ActionScript scripts. In these pages, you'll find methodologies and techniques for building over 40 real-life Flash ActionScript projects, including sample games, --- applications, Web sites, and more. New in this edition are coverage of ActionScript 2.0, Web services, Components, Printing, Video, and more. On the companion CD, you'll find all the project files and images you need to complete each project.

This book is great for anybody who wants a good, strong helping hand to learn actionscript. It provided me with a good background of actionscript, what it could do, and other general information about it. I learned so much from this book, with it's detailed lessons and heavy illustrations, taken from the flash program itself. The book comes with a very useful CD-ROM in the back, which I was unaware of when I ordered it. The CD contains all the images and layouts for you, making learning actionscript easier, as the book focuses on learning actionscript, and not using the flash interface. If you are desperate to learn Actionscript 2.0, and are willing to read a large book, buy this book.

This was the kind of comment I read before deciding to buy this book. I bought it out of curiousity and i never regretted buying it.
The book's name ("Training From The Source"), actually has a full description of what the book is all about. I must say here that, it is a very good book for anyone with a very solid OOP (Object Oriented Programming) background. Unlike other books, this is a book that READS BETWEEN THE LINES. It actually DECODES all the codes LINE BY LINE and tells you what each line does. With the lessons in the companion CD, it's just as if you are been taught by a teacher. One other thing I enjoy about the book is that, after taking you through the programming part of the Lessons, it doesn't just leave you to test the output but it also gives you a clear picture of what the output is meant to do by giving you suggestions on what you shoud click or type. I recommend this book to any programmer who wants to unleash the power of Flash's Action Script! It will give you a SOLID FOUNDATION in Action Script and also gives you a very practical knowledge how you can develop your own personal projects.

Absolutely surberb 13 Dec 2005
By Gary
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after reviewing loads of AS2 books I borrowed from my local library. I can understand now why my local university recommends it to their students studying computer graphics/programming course. The book delivers everything it says in the blurb. The accompanying CD ROM has all the files and graphics needed to complete all the tutorials. It has tons of exercises that cover the full scope of AS2. The scripts work. I'm from a graphics background with no programming experience whatsoever. I'm glad I decided to learn AS2 because it allows me to do things in flash not possible using just graphics and the timeline. And this book is making the programming accessible to me. I have found it to be the best book for giving a solid foundation in AS2 and I've no hestiation in recommending it. In fact, if you're considering buying it then I'd say do it, you'll be happy with your decision. Hope this review helps you.
