The name says it all. Contribute is an easy-to-use Web page editor designed for non-technical users. It is not intended to be a stand-alone product, so individuals looking for a Web editor should not buy it. The assumption behind Contribute is that larger Web sites have designers, programmers and administrators to make things work well and look good and others to provide the content. This product is for those others.
For the end user, Contribute is delightfully simple. It works like a Web browser, but with buttons for edit page and new page. Once in edit mode, you can use it like a word processor, with good control over formatting and the ability to add images and tables. You can also insert Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Flash movies. Once you've finished, you can choose between publishing to the Web and saving changes for later. The program keeps copies of old versions, so you can backtrack if you need to.
Web site administrators in particular will find that Contribute is thoughtfully designed. The administration tools give you fine control over what users can do and which pages they can edit. The basic settings let you protect scripts and forms or restrict editing to just text and formatting. More advanced options are possible using Dreamweaver MX templates, which allow you to create editable and non-editable regions. Word and Excel documents are sensibly filtered before insertion, to strip out unnecessary HTML.
However, before committing to Contribute you should review its limitations. Users have no access to HTML source and in general the editing features are deliberately restricted. It is also designed for static content only, and isn't suitable for sites that store content in a database or content management system. This is a fine product and a great concept, but for some Web sites it will be just a bit too restrictive. --Tim Anderson

This software has been excellent - it enables me as the web administrator to hand over the editing of content to other staff, who do not have the knowledge of HTML.It is an extrememly simple piece of software to use, and so our staff can pick it up extrememly quickly and start editing straight away.

I develop web sites and then give training to the clients on how to update their web site using Dreamweaver. For small sites it wasn't worth buying a content management solution. This usually meant a minimum of 1/2 days training and a large site manual. Now Contribute enables me to give the training in a couple of hours and only a smnall site manual is required. It is very easy to use. An excellent product for users to update their site without requiring knowledge of HTML.

I have been using Macromedia products for 2 years. Now i use Studio MX and recently bought the upgrade to Studio MX Plus which came with Contribute. Wow what a blessing, other users can update there web site while you the web master restrict control to certain areas. Its a must for a user who wants to control portions of the web site, but who has only some knowloedge of web design. For web masters its a real time saver!Buy it you wont regret it i promise!
