This is a very rewarding disc combining fresh and stimulating music with real virtuoso performances from the choir of Wells Cathedral and organist Jonathan Vaughn. The opening Jubilate is a wonderful shimmering cascade of music, soaring high and ending with a wonderfully crunchy blast from the organ. The selection is well chosen, providing wide contrast and changing colour. Those who know Macmillan's work will recognize many of his characteristic harmonic devices and the rhythms of his word settings. This music is well worth the effort that some listeners will find necessary, but don't let it frighten you! Most enjoyable!
