Book Description

15 Sep 2011
The mysterious disappearance of a Freeforester (deer poacher) on a Scottish estate, the privacy of which is ruthlessly protected by the ‘Judge’. MacLeod attempts to find his friend and narrowly survives an assassination attempt. The estate is a safe harbour for a number of crimes including drug distribution. The ‘Judge’ sends members of staff to an outdoor centre to develop kayaking and mountaineering skills to enable drug collection from ships and ensure its safe passage through the mountains. Murder, merciless pursuit and MacLeod’s desire for revenge plunge the action through the raging and turbulent rapids of the River Spean to the treacherous ice-veneered cliffs of Ben Nevis. Hunter becomes hunted - outcomes are as unpredictable as the tenuous contacts on ice-coated cliffs and as tortuous and troubled as the foaming river rapids.

If you have ever lived in a small Highland community you will feel right at home from the first word. However, this book has world wide appeal.

Smith has quite an eye for detail, the little quirks of Highland life and more importantly the folk who reside within these communities and the relationships between them. He has pinpoint accuracy when it comes to the attitudes and approaches to life his characters display towards "Freeforestry" in particular.
When things take a very dark and sinister turn, you are rocked to the very core by the drastic turn of events; Macleod acts in a way that most of us wish we could get away with, should we have the misfortune to find ourselves in his predicament.

I was gripped from beginning to end by this tale of revenge, justice, love and murder most horrid. The ingenuity "Macleod" employs throughout this novel is astounding to say the least.

If you like your stories to have many a twist and turn Macleod's Law will not disappoint. I for one am very much looking forward to a possible follow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, couldn't put it down 18 Mar 2012
Having just finished this book, I was surprised to read the negative feedback. I completely disagree with those comments.

It was a thrilling read once you got into it, with many unexpected twists and turns that kept you gripped right to the very end. It was apparent the author had in-depth of knowledge of freeforestry, kayaking and many outdoor activities, which simply added to the reading pleasure.

I would certainly recommend this novel to anybody considering it. I for one am hoping for a sequel.

Once I got into this book I couldn't put it down. The descriptions of Highland scenery, the detailed climbing scenes, the stalking, the characterisation - all showed a depth of knowledge which makes this such a good read. Looking forward to Mr Smith's next book!
