Product Description

Review

"...a great start, covering machinima–friendly games like World of Warcraft, Half Life 2 and Unreal Tournament." (PC Plus, February 2009)

Product Description

Use this book to learn how you can, at little or no expense, make virtually any movie using Machinima. The authors guide you from making your first Machinima movie to a grounding in both conventional filmmaking and Machinima technology that will let you tackle very complex film projects.

The book focuses on the following Machinima platforms:

  • The Sims 2: Arguably the most popular Machinima platform of all time, The Sims 2 allows you to tell stories ranging from romance to noir action.
  • World Of Warcraft: Tell your own tales of heroism in the world of Azeroth, following in the footsteps of award–winning Machinima creators and even the makers of South Park.
  • Medieval 2: Total War – This astonishing new game allows you to create Lord of the Rings–scale medieval battle films using just a home computer!
  • MovieStorm: For the first time, unleash the power of Machinima as a professional user using a fully–featured, fully–licensed commercial Machinima platform.

You′ll be introduced to all aspects of Machinima production, from live filming in a game through the creation of sets, props and characters, as well as the basics of cinematography, storytelling and sound design.

An excellent introduction to a vast subject.

The step-by-step sections will doubtless age quickly, but the overviews of the film-making jargon and of the basic machinima process - and especially the hands-on creative advice - will be relevant for many years to come. The included Moviestorm software is excellent, too (but check their web site for advice before installing if you have Vista rather than XP).

Recommended.

A useful book consisting of tightly-written overview chapters, and couple of mini starter tutorials. The tutorials are concise and precise, but you can find better and more up-to-date video tutorials on the web for free. This book was published in 2007 and doesn't appear to have updated since - yet the sections on story-telling, camera angles, and sound design are all still very useful primers for a beginner. There's a lot of clearly expressed common-sense here. But in terms of game-engines and dedicated real-time movie-making software, significant sections are out-of-date in 2010. For instance, since 2006/7 _iClone_ has since gone from being a toy in the early versions, to being an amazing "Photoshop for animation" in version 4.0, with tight lipsync and facial puppeteering. There's no coverage here of _Oblivion_ and its free Construction Kit as a machimina engine, and no coverage of the latest Unreal engine and its free development kit and tutorials. And I believe that the _MovieStorm_ software has recently stopped being royalty-free, re: what users can legally do with the movies they make. Given that this is the only decent introductory DIY book we currently have, it's holding up reasonably well. Just be aware that you'll probably want to read it with a marker pen in hand, marking up the many parts that are now out-of-date.

I'm still reading this book, I'm having to read around portions that don't apply to me. If you're creating Machinima in popular games, you'll be fine with this book.
I'm creating Machinima in SL, so this book is of limited use to me. Interesting tips and ideas I can use from other platforms in SL.
