Your Machine's Decorative Stitches I'm really excited - here at last is a delightful book giving detailed guidance on using those built-in decorative stitches that come with sewing machines these days. From my first glance at the familiar stitches on the attractive front cover I just knew it was the book I've been waiting for. Having owned my machine for over 20 years I'd only used it for basic sewing - its manual was confusing and uninspiring so I never really "had a go" with its many built-in embroidery stitches. What a waste. This book is inspiring: clearly written and illustrated, with an excellent "Getting Started" chapter on the basics. The rest of the book consists of 14 colourful projects which, when done in sequence, introduce new techniques and design ideas; even if your particular machine's stitches are not quite the same, just use one that's similar. Great for intrepid non-starters like myself, and a useful resource of ideas for everyone.

fancy stitches 21 Aug 2011

The book looks good, have read through it but have not had time to try anything. I do patchwork too so trying to get up to date before I change to my other machine which is better for this type of stitching. Look forward to giving it a go as this looks like what i have been looking for.

Didn't Deliver 3 May 2011

I was really hoping that this book would cover a lot more stitches, like the cover led me to believe. I found the cover to be very misleading. In the stitched sample on the cover, there are about 16 stitches that aren't covered in the 28 stitches chosen for her projects. And the stitches on the left side of the cover? They aren't all covered in the book either. Seeing them on the cover made me think they would be featured in the book.

I had bought this book to supplement my Janome manual which was sadly inadequate to teach the stitch functions on my otherwise wonderful machine. Imagine my dismay when the main direction in this book was to consult your manual. I'm sure she didn't want to go beyond the capabilities of most machines but I don't feel like she did anything more than cover the very basics of length, width, manipulating the feed of the fabric, and flipping the stitch. Then using the basic 28 stitches she chose to make pictures. I love the cover pic the most; the projects? Not so much; very 70's inspired (though mostly just color related).

Your Machine's Decorative Stitches 29 May 2011
By Gail Rodgers - Published on Amazon.com

As someone that owns a Janome Horizon 7700 which has over 200 decorative stitches, I'm always on the look out for books and articles giving ideas on ways to use all those great stitches. This book had some great ideas, but they were all of the same type of projects. Trees, flowers, etc. made with decorative stitches and made into small wall quilts. Although they showed some great ideas that could be furthered developed, I was disappointed that there wasn't more variety in themes to make use all these stitches that the latest machines have.

Disappointed 23 July 2011

I was disappointed in this book. I thought I was getting book that would give ideas on using the decorative stitches on your machine for quilting, sewing or applique. Instead it focused on projects using the deco stitches to do pictures that looked unfinished. I am sorry I bought the book.
