Biography

In 1997 Andy LaPlegua established the project, Icon Of Coil, which was primarily a concept built around a logo, graphic design and music. Soon after the inception, the music soon turned out to be the most important part of the concept and LaPlegua invited Sebastian Komor, who he had worked with before on the project Sector 9, (now called Moonitor) in 1996, to work with him on the project as a ... The second Icon of Coil album 'The Soul is in the Software' was a classic of the genre, ranking alongside the best of fellow industrial/dance artists such as Apoptygma Berzerk, VNV Nation and Covenant. Amazingly, 'Machines are Us' is even better, without doubt one of the best albums in the style ever released.
The album is full of tracks guaranteed to be dancefloor fillers at any industrial club night - from the trancey 'Consumer' and 'Existence in Progress' to the 80's electro influenced 'Shelter' and 'Wiretrip'. However, those who like slower, more atmospheric industrial grooves will not be disappointed with track like 'Faith:not important' and 'Sleep:less'.
Simply a must-buy CD for fans of Apoptygma Bezerk, VNV Nation, Covenant, Seabound and the like, and would surely be enjoyed by any fans of trance, techno and industrial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the dance floor! 21 July 2004
By Acyclic
Format:Audio CD
Every ioc album has unique sound, after their slighty slower first with 'Serenity is the Devil' they followed up with 'Soul is in the Software' with the classic single 'Access and Amplify'.
This, their third album, is aimed solely at the dancefloor, with tracks like 'Mono:Overload' and the amazing 'shelter' the strong beat demands that you dance. Light relief is provided by 'Wiretrap', but then hey, we all love big speakers :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Immensely enjoyable 30 Dec 2005

High caliber electro.. Not really industrial..(not heavy or dark enough for that). Rather this is heavy-beat electro infused by techno-pop sensibilty. Emminently dancable, frequently thought-provoking lyrics, and always enjoyable. Excellent studio production, helping to shape IOC's identity...and check out what I can only describe as techno-dub on that last track. My first IOC purchase.. but surely not my last

5.0 out of 5 stars Industrial/Techno classic from IoC 30 Jan 2013
By Jeffus
Format:Audio CD
I don't know what it is about bands like Icon of Coil, Apoptygma Berzerk and Gary Numan.. I never tire of banging out thier works... Timeless!!

So many modern bands stick to the same old sound like most modern, pop bands. Although, each Icon of Coil album is fundimentaly different, there is always a flavour of the genre which still sticks true to it.

There are some MASSIVE anthems on this album. Sadly, they aren't all diamonds, so some do fall a bit flat compared to the floor-fillers like Dead Enough For Life and Shelter.
I think 3 stars is a bit harsh so that's why I went for 4 stars.
It's more like 3.
