Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Having met while childhood neighbours in Leeds, Daniel Ormondroyd and Jon Nowell cut their teeth in the music industry during the mid-1990s running the infamous Big Kahuna Burger club nights in and around London (rumoured to have inspired Norman Cook to reinvent himself as Fatboy Slim). The duo's remarkable debut Machine Says Yes exposes their new-found fascination with acid-house-tinged electronica alongside long-time influences such as the Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx. Fresh, diverse and fluid while managing to sound both eclectic and mechanical; Machine Says Yes is a strange beast indeed. "Fear Of Guitars" opens the album with an oblique mantra from Super Furry Animals' frontman Gruff Rhys. Set to a drifting, blissed-out ambient backing track, it's immediately chased off by the thumping electro bass of "Glitterball", a swirling acid-fuelled dance floor stomp. Throughout the album, soulful atmospheric melodies are set to hard mechanical rhythms and peppered with intriguing alien sound effects, making for a truly unique and unpredictable feel. While predominantly instrumental, there are also some engaging vocal contributions from the likes of alt-country singer Eileen Rose and former Gus Gus member Hafdis Huld. Meanwhile Nowell's sense of community is obviously still going strong having invited his new neighbour, one-time Verve bassist Simon Jones, to contribute some organic rhythm. Infectiously groovy and outrageously imaginative, Machine... is an enormously commanding debut.--Christopher Barrett

5.0 out of 5 stars Boards of Canada meet Playgroup., 4 May 2002

Experimental and diverse vocals, minimal soundscapes, gentle build up and roaring breakbeat crescendos. To appreciate the fast and funky, you have to have experienced the slow and moody. "Machine Says Yes" is the complete package and has enough variety to satisfy dance music fans of all genres.

Acid bloops, big beat breaks, deep house vocals, ambient pads, electro snares, 80's synthesiser samples and Daft Punk funk.

The title track fizzes with luscious, arcade game immitation sounds, which are muted and finely balanced by the nonchalant and laidback vocals, which are reminicent of Beth Orton (on her collaboration with The Chemical Brothers).

"Nothing is wrong" growls on a bed of no frills 4/4 beats and the sassy vocals make this, and "Mindset to cycle" comparable to Playgroup, in a 80's kitch kind of way.

Amongst the electro experimentaion is "Hayling". As a big fan of chill out I would have to name this the highlight track. Maybe because of its contrast to the rest of the album, and it's freshness. The sounds are more natural and flowing, the vocals are lush and deep. It contradicts most of what has been heard so far and would not be out of place on a Fridge or Orbital album.

"North Pole Transmission" has a strong Chemical brothers vibe. The private psychedelic reel anyone?

Come to think of it, there aren't really many original ideas here. The album chops and changes, but follows formula created by others before them. It still sounds fantastic, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it groundbreaking.

It's a welcome addition to albums by the artists I have named above, and in places, it out-does them.

I bought Machine Says Yes after reading reviews that it was sleeper album of the year and buy this if you like Dig Your Own Hole. I was suprised as it was even better than that it blew me a way. The production is tight and the tunes are fresh and funky. They are producers to watch!

4.0 out of 5 stars WOW funky stuff, 6 Jan 2003
This review is from: Machine Says Yes (Audio CD)
I just love this album, the best thing about it is its easy to liten to on any occasion, FC kahunas music is that sort of music where you can appreciate it at any time.

I find my self putting it on when i'm just chilling or working, and also when i'm off out on the razz, it realy gets me in the mood because of its funkyness and GO!

I bought machines say yes after hearing a few tracks on the radio (pete tong and seb fontaine, radio 1) namely the track machines say yes because it stook in my head whn i heard it and the single wasn't out at the time. I decided to buy the album and now i cant stop playing it, its great.

if your in to the whole progressive house and electric funk style dance scene then this album is definately for you, and even if your not then i'd still defiantely reckomend that this is cd you need in your collection.

I love the versitillity FC uses, from glitterball, a faster and more energetic track with a beast of a baseline and cool sounding FX, to the mellow and relaxing hayling, which just sends a chill down your spine when you hear the simple but tingling melody, and the totaly harmonic vocals.

Its an album that grows on you every time you liten to it, i definateley reckomend you buy it.
