5.0 out of 5 stars Never dated 27 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
This is good example of an excellent book which is standing the test of time (it was published in 1994) and has nothing to fear from new entries, and it can still be found at a good price.

It is very difficult to learn how to quilt just by reading a book, and this book is no different from that point of view. It is divided into simple exercises which, if followed properly, help build up your skills gradually, starting from determining the stitch length for straight line quilting, then on to freehand quilting with some relatively easy patterns to practice with, and extras such as using a double needle. There is also some general quilting information and an extra bonus of tables at the back giving information on various types of threads, needles and batting. I found this very useful.

Quilting doesn't come easy to me but the second time I tried freehand quilting on a small wall-hanging I actually received compliments. So thank you Maureen Noble.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Try 20 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Good starter book with some good ideas. Easy to follow and very helpful instructions and tips. As always, needs constant practice but certainly shows results. Does not give direction details of pattern to sew, so be careful that you do not go over threads or have to go back.

This book de-mystifies the skills of Free-motion Machine Quilting. Step by step lessons take the quilter through the different aspects of machine quilting. A must for anyone looking for a sensible, clear and progressive path to machine quilting success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 19 Oct 2010
By Lisa
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've recently taken up quilting, and now own several books, all calling themsleves quilting books. Almost all of those said books have very little information on actual quilting prefering to concentrate on patchwork, cutting etc etc.

This book is radically different, the majority of the book is actually dedicated to improving your quilting skills. It works through several activities which aim to improve your skills at each step. It finishes with some suggested project that cover some of the non quilting topics.

The is very much a welcome addition to my learning and an absolute must in terms of demonstrating actual QUILTING skills.
