Product Description

Gerard Butler stars in this action biopic of Sam Childers, a one-time drug-dealing LA biker who becomes a crusader for child soldiers in Sudan following his dramatic conversion to Christianity. The film follows Childers as he puts his lowlife gangland origins behind him and follows a spiritual calling to embark on a series of dangerous armed missions into war-torn East Africa. Despite dire warnings from government agencies, he sets up an orphanage for children kidnapped by the LRA, a renegade militia army that routinely forces youngsters to become soldiers before they reach their teens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Machine Gun Preacher 2 Nov 2011
Gerard Butler has his best role to date playing real life person Sam Childers, a down and out in America who is hooked on drugs and involved in dealing them. Things come to a head when he ends up brutally stabbing a hitchhiker who tries to attack him and his friend, and dumping his body on the side of the road. He looks to his wife, a born again Christian for help and his life evolves in more ways than one....

In a very realistic portrayal of the crisis in Sudan, understandably this is a heartbreaking film especially because the barbarism still continues today, however Gerard Butler's character breaks that up with his inspirational speeches and drive. He reinforces that sense of urgency about not sitting in some board room talking, but about 'taking action'.

All in all, a must see film!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing true story 15 Nov 2011
This is a must see movie. An unbelievable story of one person's struggle to help children in South Sudan who were being taken from their homes and brutalized, turned into (unwilling) soldiers, abused beyond our imagination.
Gerard Butler is giving an outstanding performance as Sam Childers.

This really is a must see film for the outstanding performance by Gerard Butler in this role. It is such a shame that it didn't get more publicity and a wider release at the time, and how Mr Butler didn't get nominated for any awards for his performance as Sam Childers is beyond me.
Gerry totally becomes the character of Childers to the point you completely forget you are watching Gerard Butler. Acting at it's finest and not a hint of a Scottish accent!
Good supporting performances too, especially from Michael Shannon as Childers' junkie friend.
A heartbreaking story that deserves to be seen by all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Machine Gun Preacher - Saint or Sinner 29 Nov 2011
Machine Gun Preacher would not have been a film I would readily have chosen to watch. Having done so, I can say I have seen a film that is immensely touching and at times painstaking to watch. It isn't easy viewing, especially due to the nature of the film, but it is one I would recommend. Gerard Butler gives his finest performance to date as a man whose past is brutal to say the least, but whose life is changed by an incident which leads him to find God. His new found faith leads him to Uganda, and then more importantly to the Sudan, where he witnesses scenes that would remain with anyone for life. He decides to undertake building an orphanage. Along the way he comes across numerous obstacles and in many ways despite his good efforts takes on the role of mercenary. As the film goes on you go through this journey along with Gerard Butlers character. I am not sure if I am left believing the lead charachter is a Saint for what he has done, or a sinner for his past crimes. I think that is one for each individual to decide upon. The fact that this is based on real life makes it all the more disturbring. Either way you are left realising what an awful world we sometimes live in. Not for the faint hearted.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'A TRULY REMARKABLE STORY' 3 Aug 2014
By rbmusicman TOP 500 REVIEWER
The film tells us the story of how 'Sam Childers' (Gerard Butler) transformed his life from a villian to become a 'hero' in a far off land.
It starts with his release from prison, his family whilst he was serving time had turned to the church for comfort, and in fact had found 'faith'
'Sam' now released seems to want to pick up where he had left off risking a further jail term, however his family, now deeply religous persuade him to join them at a 'service'
'Sam' finds unexpectantly the service and baptism of comfort, he begins to turn his life around, even starting up a business.
In a dream, 'Sam' believes that 'God' has directed him to build a church for their community.
Whilst watching a news program, he is drawn to the plight of the people in 'Sudan' and 'Northern Uganda' where the people were being slaughtered by a revolutionary, rouge army leaving thousands of young children orphaned.
What follows is the remarkable story of 'Sam Childers' crusade to protect as many of the children as possible and build them a safe enviroment to live in.
The sights he saw after an attack leads him to take up arms against the evils of the terrorist organisation.
How will he balance his values between his 'loving' home life and what he see's as his purpose in life.
What can i really is a good and inspirational movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Salvation's Wolf 12 Mar 2012
By Denton
The title of this film is plain bad and completely diminishes the film's true value. I would have called it something like Salvation's Wolf. Machine Gun Preacher sounds like a pulp fiction slapstick / tongue and cheek film ala Samuel L Jackson's 'Great vengeance and furious anger' speech. This is far from the gritty and painful film Machine Gun Preacher actually is. Imagne Blood Diamond meets The Mission (De Niro). It's a true story about Sam Childers, who is still putting his life on the line to protect children in Sudan, Africa.

I was absolutely drawn in and, at times, completely blown away. The film brings a powerful and sobering message that has never been more apt than now. While we Westerners moan about our mid credit crisis woes (me included), thousands of kids and families are being ruthlessly slaughtered, maimed and abused across Africa (and other parts of the world). We know it's happening, but so often turn a blind eye. Films like this are so important in moving us to take notice and action. The context of a film like this puts our lives in crystal clear perspective. We are very very lucky.

I support the actions of Sam Childers actions 100%. There is no amount of justice that can be levelled against these inhuman filth who cause so much pain and distress, that is enough to pay or what they've done. I wish here in the West, with so much moral decline eveywhere we turn, that we had the courage to deal such swift and finalistic punishment. We are too concerned with the human rights of those who wilfully, joyfully, repeatedly and violently destroy the lives of others. If people's actions are inhuman, they forgo their human rights in my book.
