Machine Gun Etiquette was the album that brought the Damned into the charts and opened up their music to millions more than hard core punk fans. Ironically the massive hit from the album was Smash it Up, as punk as you could possibly get! But the album was also home to another two hit singles Love Song & I just can t be happy today. After 25 years the Damned (with its new line up but including Songwriter Captain Sensible and Front man Dave Vanian ) decided to do a one off tour to commemorate this seminal album . The Manchester show was captured on film with a five camera crew and a set that also drew in other Damned hit singles such as New Rose , Neat Neat Neat , Eloise, and the epic fan favourite Curtain Call not forgetting the Captains Anti Pope. This package is a bumper value box set with a fully re-mastered CD album , The full and complete 20 track Manchester show on DVD PLUS a bonus DVD all in 5.1 Surround sound!. The Damned are the only man standing of the big 3 UK punk bands and they have developed a huge fan base globally. In the bonus DVD you can see footage from 1977 & 1979 in the studio with Joe Strummer! Live in Japan, Live on the West Coast of America , Naked bowling! In fact there is a total whopping 285 minutes of footage contained here. The box set contains unseen photos in the booklet plus liner notes by the good Captain himself. The Damned will be out on the road again this summer with a date at the goth fest in March already confirmed.

Format:Audio CD
The CD and DVD of the 'Machine Gun Etiqueutte' live show would be amazing enough but for me it is the second DVD that makes this a very worthwhile purchase. A couple of extra live shows, a featurette following the Damned on tour, a film of the Captain's visit to Berlin to re-record 'Wot' plus the actual shoot itself and a whole load more I havent had the chance to watch yet. So a great DVD/CD package for any fans of the Damned. As if we havent already been spoiled enough recently with the 'So Who's Paranoid' album!

I can't help but think that The Damned have missed a bit of a trick here.
In celebration of their 25th anniversary they have given us fans some excellent content across 3 disks which showcases their musical genius, and fantastic VFM as well.
However, perhaps they should have provided all this in a much larger box consisting mainly of empty space, save for the addition of some souvenir items. Perhaps some marbles, a scarf, or some coasters? I would have willingly forked out £84.99 for such an item. It would remain sealed, placed on my shelf where I would stare at it and wonder how much it might be worth in another 35 years time.
Edit: On a more serious note, it should be noted that the DVD disks are the same as the two in the 2006 release only with the addition of an audio only CD packaged in a smaller CD sized cardboard box and for a smaller price, so better value. If you are only interested in the video then some might prefer the normal DVD jewel box presentation. However the audio quality of the CD is very good.
As I type this The Damned are currently touring to celebrate their 35th anniversary, and wowing audiences along the way. There are two CDs available of The Roundhouse and Manchester shows which are excellent.

Could have been better - But still AWESOME.

The CD is very good, sound quality obviously from soundboard with some tweaking to get the levels right - in general it's a great live disk if you want to hear a legendary punk band (perhaps the best) playing the songs that made them the heroes of noise, and still making them sound fresh, vibrant, and new. Having said that . . . the packaging is a bit thin, not much to look at and no real cohesive concept behind the imagery, in fact I'm not really sure why the cover looks like a grave for the Damned with the ghostly figures of Vanian and Sensible hovering above in tableau - it seems cheesy in comparison to the MGE25 imagery and artwork which is (Sadly) unavailable in the states. The DVD was, perhaps, the biggest disappointment with the sound dropping in and out as if run through a limiter of some kind to equalize the hi and low elements . . . completely unnecessary and annoying at times. The visuals are great, and the extra features completely SAVE the DVD side of this box set. But all in all there will be a some elements that make you grumble and some that make you cheer - hopefully more of the latter.
