3.0 out of 5 stars A curate's egg 11 April 2008
Not a great version, but as modern adaptions go, it's surprising how well Macbeth has been fitted to gangland. Film's superior ability to deliver action when compared with the stage is exploited to the full, and pretty good it is too. Hampered by quite a lot of mediocre (though seldom actually bad) delivery, yet on the physical level the acting is often compelling, especially from Lord and Lady Macbeth themselves. The play's frequent moral ambiguity sometimes seems out of place in the underworld, but perhaps that's just my own stereotypes creeping it. All in all worth a look, especially if you like Shakespreare in modern dress. I even bought a copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Unusual Retelling. 20 July 2009
I got this for a birthday present as I'm intrested in Sam Worthington's work and like Shakespeare's stories. Macbeth is a different retelling to other films of the same name, set in Austraillia and in a urban underground. Basic plot if you don't know: Macbeth is visited by three witches (this time schoolgirls instead of old hags) who tells him that he will be great and rule if he gets rid of Duncan. But events go out of control, many deaths and despair lead to a bloody final battle for two characters. This is a violent, visually stunning, sexy and well done verison of the story. Geoffrey Wright made Rommer Stomper which was a conversioal film that earned a 18, here in Macbeth I'm surpised in places that the violence and sex got away with a 15 but it dosen't stop being a film to see. Worthington was perfectly cast as the lead, throwing raw charsmia and his amazing acting talents at you. Victoria Hill was also good as Lady Macbeth, mad in the right places but you felt for her along with the other characters. I highly recommened this product to anyone who loves Shakespeare made into a sexy and violent retelling, worthy four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, sexy and Sam =D 30 April 2010
I found that, after watching Avatar and Terminator Salvation, I was falling for Sam Worthington, who's acting ability is amazing, whatever the film, so I was compelled to watch this when I found out he was in it...
I love Shakespeare. The gory, bloody, tormented ones are my favourites, because I think they have more bite to them, and I have performed this play before, so I was very much aware of the story, so I was a little put off when I read it was set in the underground drug/crime world of Australia, but I think it works really well as a modern remake is concerned.
Sam is amazing as Macbeth. He is tormented, sexy, ruthless, powerful and crazy in all the right places and I could believe how amazing his performance in this film is/was. Lady Macbeth... Well, she's just brilliant! I loved the women who played her and thought she did an amazing job... The 'old hags' or 'school girls' as they are in this film were great and I am absolutely and completed green eyed that they got to have some steamy scenes with Sam, lucky witches!!! (joke intended)
Which does make me wonder about the ages rating... Seems it should be an 18, but thats just me and it doesn't stop people from watching them no does it...
Everyone in this film was phenomenal and I thoroughly enjoyed it... Is well worth a watch!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good! 22 Jun 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I thought I would hate this adaptation of my favourite Shakespeare play but I really enjoyed it. I have seen some truly terrible performances of Macbeth over the years, both on screen and on stage, but I thought this was good.
The acting wasn't always great and I think some of the rhythm of the language was lost, however it is a great piece of entertainment and is quite loyal to the play. Macbeth is a dirty, dark and violent play and this was portrayed well in the acion movie style.

It suits a 21st century audience- high-energy soundtrack, sex, graphic violence; the directors have played with the text well to suit the audience and it works surprisingly well as a modern-day action movie. However someone coming from a feminist perspective might disagree with the weird sisters being played as sexy school girls and participating in an orgy with Macbeth. Shakespeare on the other hand probably would have loved the idea, if only he could have gotten away with it in the Jacobean era!

Not a patch on the play text but worth a view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Macbeth.. 11 Aug 2010
I know this has had mainly bad reviews, but I actually really liked it. LOVED it in fact. Sam Worthington is a brilliant actor and has proved so (again!!) by playing the role of Macbeth. A very interesting re-telling of the story of Macbeth. I found it very funny in some parts (not sure if that was the intent or not but it worked really well either way!) I definitly recommend this film!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Macbeth (2006) 10 Jan 2010
The language in Shakespeare's plays is rather difficult to understand , especially if you are a non-native speaker . However , if you do , it is truly magnificent and poet. I really enjoy the modern interpretations of Shakespeare's work . This latest adaptation of Macbeth is a fine example . It is set in contemporary times , which makes it more interesting for the viewer to watch , but at the same time it remains true to the spirit and language of Shakespeare . The actors , from first to last , deliver their lines as though it were the most natural thing in the world , making it seemless . If you appreciate Shakespeare you will appreciate this adaptation .

Macbeth is my favourite Shakespeare play and I've always thought it would play well as a gangster movie. Sadly this travesty of a film just shows you how not to do it. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars There should be more like it
The people who made this film took on a hard job - to insert Shakespeare's text into the Australian drug-dealing underworld. And they so nearly pull it off! Read more
