Book Description

26 May 2011
Macbeth is one of the greatest plays ever written, but Shakespeare's depiction of Macbeth bears little resemblance to the truth. The real Macbeth lived in a time of constant battle between those Scots who followed the Celtic system of electing the King, and those who followed the English system of Inheriting the crown in the direct line of succession. Macbeth and Duncan were both grandsons of King Malcolm, but when the King named Duncan as his successor, it caused great resentment, resulting in a protracted war between the clans. When Duncan proved to be a weak and foolish King, the stage was set for a final battle that would come to define Scotland and its people for generations. In 'Macbeth, the last Celtic King', the fog of history is finally lifted, and the true Macbeth is revealed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Macbeth was real? -He sure was! 12 Jun 2011
By MacSassie - Published on Amazon.com
I agree with most of what was said in the previous review. This author also wrote a book about Boddicea (the warrior queen from ancient Scotland) which I loved, so I gave this one a shot. I thought it was every bit as entertaining and succeeded in adding historical context to the Shakespearian play, especially for people like me who didn't know MacBeth really existed. The maps at the back helped me to understand the distances mentioned in the book and the glossary helped me to pronounce all the names and places. It was exciting and moved along very quickly. I read it on my Kindle, which I also love. (:
4.0 out of 5 stars The Historical MACBETH 6 Jun 2011
By HistoryBuff - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book because of my interest in the historical Macbeth (and to be honest, because the cover looked good). I'm glad to report the book itself lived up to my `cover' expectations. Knowing quite a bit about the historical figures Shakespeare based his plays on, I found this book to be both interesting and entertaining. The motivation for Macbeth's actions are made clear in respect to the politic practices of Scotland during the eleventh century, and the reader gets a clearer picture of the true-to-life experiences that most likely occurred during Macbeth's lifetime. The `'Macbeth' name is familiar to most, but his historical background is not so widely known. This book helps bridge that gap.
