Product Description

Product Description

This volume provides a short history of the Portuguese colony in the Far East. Beginning with an account of the pioneering ambitions of Prince Henry the Navigator, historian Austin Coates retraces the discovery of the sea route to the Far East and the subsequent foundation of Macao as a Portuguese enclave in 1556-7. A Macao Narrative relates the story of Macao, from its glorious beginnings as a 'city of adventurers enjoying a rich life, confidently aware that at any moment they might have to fight for it' to the Opium War, that led to the end of 'one of the most remarkable trading epochs in history'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb and fascinating book, extremely well written, 18 Oct 2002
This review is from: A Macao Narrative (Paperback)
Reading this book on a warm summer evening at the Pousada De Sao Tiago (now a hotel on the southern tip of the Macau peninsula), cocktail in hand, as the sun was going down over the South China Sea was one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I've ever had.

It's perfect for anyone wishing to learn a little of Macau's history and the Portuguese Empire in the East, and complements very nicely a trip to the ex-colony (in fact, it should be essential reading for anyone going there). Macau's famous non-gambling related sights (e.g. the Senate, the ruins of Sao Paolo, Monte Fort, the Protestant Cemetary) are all put in historical context as the story progresses, in a much more complete and lucid way than any guide book.
