Product Description

In the years before the incomparable Sherlock Holmes drove away the competition, and despite his arrogant claim to be the first of his kind, Baker Street was filled with consulting detectives. Among the investigators who worked out of that famous thoroughfare, none experienced such a capricious career as Mr Macallister Fogg.

To judge Fogg against Holmes would be entirely unreasonable, for the two men couldn’t be more different in character. Where Holmes was driven and precise, Fogg was a feckless dabbler, concerned more with his mechanical inventions and chemical experiments than with the solving of his clients’ problems. Undoubtedly, had he not taken on Mrs Emma Boswell as his secretary, he’d have quickly gone out of business and there’d be no record of his eccentricities or the remarkable threats he encountered and somehow nullified. It is fair to say that Fogg, on more than one occasion, saved not just his clients but the Earth itself, and certainly could not have done so without the long suffering Mrs Boswell at his side.

Mark Hodder, author of the Philip K. Dick Award winning BURTON & SWINBURNE series, introduces a new steampunk hero, a man who blunders from one weird adventure to another: Macallister Fogg, Consulting Detective!

This was a bit like reading a comic book. Ok for what it was... and mildly entertaining. A short story.

Mark Hodder has given himself the opportunity to write a short, humorous, and creative book. Because of its length, "book" may be misleading. However, it is great for the Kindle. Shows that a reader can be satisfied with something this short. Hodder didn't have to add filler just to fill up additional pages. Sooner of alter the complete adventures of Macallister Fogg will come out in an omnibus volume. Can't wait.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun but Short 15 Oct 2013

The MaCallister Fogg series is great. Well developed characters, fun plots, breezy and well written. But they are short. Great fir a quick read while in line, waiting room, etc, but don't expect a novel or even a novella. They would be fabulous expanded into book length or all in one book, fleshed out a bit.

I picked up this short detective story on a whim. As I usually do, I downloaded and read the sample from Amazon first and liked it enough to give it a go. It was a nice quick read, nothing too deep or mind-tiring to read. The main two characters are good together and are a good couple to head the story, providing a nice balance to each other. The main character, MaCallister Fogg is somewhat of a lucky idiot, picture a stupid Sherlock Holmes who has amazing luck and even more amazing friends. Emma Boswell is Fogg's able assistant who more than proves her worth...repeatedly. Now, some might find it a little annoying that Fogg is such a nitwit and that Boswell is actually the brains behind the team but I found it interesting and most often, funny.

The team stumbles upon a mystery and are determined to stop the crime from happening. There is a little bit of magic and some scientific wowzerness that stretches reality a little, but the fun and rowdiness comes together in a good little romp with a clean wrap up.

If I had to rate this I would give it a four out of five. There is a solid pulpiness that runs through the story that appeals to me. Plus I love Sherlock Holmes and Ms Boswell is just about a perfect match for him. I liked it enough that I bought the second story in the series (out of a total of three out right now).
