I would love it to have been five stars- I bought it due to advice for my RSI and early arthritis but, though I speak very clearly and am used to public speaking, the accuracy is low. VERY low. Somewhere around 45%, IF that.

My fault entirely- I had to get it trained up quickly and pushed through the ENTIRE training in three sittings. It began to recognise words I hadn't even spoken and to refuse simple ones like 'the' half-way through.

Oh- and I am typing this review!

I think I may need to RETRAIN it from scratch and take a week to do so...

1. +: Easy enough to install. Just put in the disk and away you go with the instructions. -: Little to no supporting paperwork (I actually LIKE hard copy manuals) so you must have access to online support and FAQ.

2. +: Headphones are nice and very sensitive. -: If a bit uncomfortable. I would recommend that if you are going to invest in this that you might consider a better headset as having to wear it all the time you are using the programme, if you have RSI or a debilitating condition, COULD be sore. So- in THAT case you might prefer to buy it WITHOUT the headset and use the difference for a better one! Note- the US sell this cheaper than I could purchase it in the UK. Annoying...

3. +: Possible to use in most applications you may wish to use it in- I managed to write in Yahoo Messenger even if it typed gobble-dee-gook as well as in replying to threads online in Safari. Tested it ONLY in "dictation" mode (for writing with) so cannot comment on the feasibility of being able to switch applications to be able to be freed from having to use my poor hands... -: Possibly the fact that you appear to need to switch between modes to use it for everything. I am not sure I can keep my hands off my laptop pad and keyboard if I have to faff on with switching because I am dictating to YIM, Safari AND Appleworks (yes, I love that app.) but want to open my Photoshop files because I am going to use Dreamweaver and then email someone from Mail...

4. Idiosyncrasy of the software- It doesn't appear to totally conform to British spelling, choosing at times to insist on the use of "z" in place of the British "s"...

An example (first the typed text and then the dictated):

Would I buy it again? No other option. Just now it is gathering dust but I am going to HAVE to have another shot at it as I have no choice in the matter. -This was dictated with iListen.

The dead by 80 again? No other option. Just the oldest gathering dust but I'm going to have another shot at here to as they have no choice in the mountain. - decent woes dictate to it was iListen.

Is it value for money? Couldn't say... I hope so!

A quick google of "Macspeech dictate" will bring up the news that I listen has been binned in favour of a totally new Mac product based on the Dragon Naturallyspeaking platform called Macspeech Dictate. It costs US$199 and is available mid Feb 2008. Reduced upgrade available for I listen owners at US$99 or US$39 if purchased in 2008

Having spent the time and effort training the programme- it still cannot do the simplest of dictation. It produces at best nonsense at worst jibberish.
I know Mac software is more expensive but this software is a joke. It is not worth the money it is found to be wanting in many areas. Especially if you use Microsoft Office for Mac!
Also support from MacSpeech is less than helpful and very slow to act.
