The Seven Last Words from the Cross is wonderfully fresh, inventive and constantly surprising music. Some listeners will find it challenging, but the harmonies are generally accessible and the texture of the music is open. This is not 'easy listening', but the effort is well worthwhile and after a few hearings everything falls into place. The Cantos Sagrados is a haunting gem of a piece.

If there is one reason to buy this disk then it has to be for the music. This is a work that is very poinant and emotional and is one of the lesser known works by the up-and-coming composer James Macmillan. It is given a good account here although there are places where the singing is uncertain. It is however commendable in the fact that this is new and tricky music and the overall performance is sound. Yet again it is the music though which will leave you startled and im sure this composer and eventually, this piece will go far.
