I came to use a Macbook Pro alongside a Hengedock after using an iMac for 2-3 years. I thought this set up would be relatively similar but give me the added portability of a laptop.

Firstly, the hengedock IS very well designed. It fits snugly (not perfect, but a nice fit), optimises space, and looks great. After 3-months of use however, it has left a white mark on my laptop which refuses to be wiped off as Hengedock state can be done.
The initial set up was also a bit of a pain. The minidisplay port has to be perfect otherwise you can just lose connection mid-way through use. i opted to use the ethernet cable too (wired over wireless anyday!). This was also painful as the macbook was prone to moving forward very very slightly whilst docked thus losing connection to the ethernet/minidisplay port. However, after 4-5 weeks i got the cables more or less perfect and didn't run into many problems after that.

The main reason for this review and the subsequent 3-star rating was the problems i had whilst using the dock.

The macbook pro ran flawlessly as a standalone unit. But when using it alongside the hengedock/Sony Tv via HDMI i had alot of issues/crashes - things i wouldn't usually expect from OS X.
On normal use it would be fine, but when using the laptop for multiple tasks, the laptop would struggle. The fans would go into overdrive and sound like it was being used on full power. I was initially quite worried about this as it didn't sound healthy and after a bit of research i found the MBPs use the keyboard to intake air into the fans. Obviously when being closed and put in a dock, this isn't possible and so the internal fans go into overdrive trying to keep things cool.

This product, whilst attractive, simply does not deliver in daily practical use.

The fundamental issue with this dock is around the display port, ethernet and power connectors - despite several hours of fiddling about I just could not get these to connect reliably when re-docking. These connectors pins are just too small to allow for the tolerances needed as despite your best efforts your MBP will always go down in a slightly different position each time. I wanted a dock I could drop my MBP in and out of quickly and easily, sadly the Henge Dock fails to achieve this in any way. I think I'll wait for the thunderbolt docks to arrive and continue to use my trusty Twelve South Book Arc instead!

The problem with having a Henge Dock - how it can damage your laptop...
(I would've given this item no stars if I could, as I was able to only use it on 2 occasions before it became unusable because of the damage to the MiniDisplay port.)

This item you have to build yourself. YOU have to put the plugs into the system and ensure they are screwed in with wee screws. If you get it wrong you will damage your MacBook. I now have a broken Thunderbolt Video socket as the plug pushed it into the MacBook.

Not good item dont buy. Also tons of cabling not shown in videos or images.

Setting up the docking station was a bit of a pain, especially the monitor connections, but then, once it was up and running, a dream. I've used BookEndz before and of the two, Henge Docks is by far 'nicer'.

I bought this dock about a month ago, and although I am using it now and am happy with how it looks and declutters my desk, I almost threw it away out of frustration because of the MiniDisplayPort not fitting properly. They really should include a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI or DVI adapter (as with the USB and other ports), because both an Apple adapter and a third-party I tried were not fitting properly so I ended up connecting the display cable first and then sliding the laptop on the dock in order for it to work.

If you intend to fully populate this with all the possible connections i.e., Power, network, Firewire 800, 2 x USB Audio in and Audio out, Then good Luck! you will need a lot of patience and after fiddling around with the alignment of all the connectors and reaching the point of satisfaction, be prepared for a second bought of disappointment when you take your machine out of the dock and realise that you will need to go through the whole process again to put it back in!

Be very clear here, you are looking at purchasing a big bundle of cables, some retaining screws and a piece of moulded plastic. In my view it's not very good!

This worked well to begin with, but after 3-4 months it became a struggle to dock the laptop to the extent that I've now given up on it and replaced it with an alternative product. I suspect the plastic around the ports has warped.
