Book Description

30 Oct 2011 Missing Manuals

With Lion, Apple has unleashed the most innovative version of Mac OS X yet—and once again, David Pogue brings his humor and expertise to the #1 bestselling Mac book. Mac OS X 10.7 completely transforms the Mac user interface with multi-touch gestures borrowed from the iPhone and iPad, and includes more than 250 brand-new features. This book reveals them all with a wealth of insight and detail--and even does a deep dive into iCloud, Apple's wireless, free syncing service for Macs, PCs, iPhones, and iPads.

  • Perfect for newcomers. Get crystal-clear, jargon-free introduction to the Dock, the Mac OS X folder structure, Safari, Mail, and iCloud.
  • Go in-depth. Learn how use key new features such as full-screen apps, Mission Control, the new Mac App Store, Launchpad, Resume, Auto Save, Versions, AirDrop, and more. Are you even more of a power user? Learn to set up a network, make a Lion flash drive, and even learn the basics of Lion's underlying Unix.

There's something new on practically every page of this new edition, and David Pogue brings his celebrated wit and expertise to every one of them. Apple's brought a new cat to town, and Mac OS X Lion: The Missing Manual is the best way to tame it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent resource book 4 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Bought this one after some research of the literature available on the topic.

The book is written excellently, the author explaining everything quickly and easily without making any fuss. I am an advanced computer user with a lot of experience and I find the language to be very easy to understand both for computer literate and non computer literate users.

Also the illustrations are quite useful. Excellent to use as a resource book when you're tryting to do something with your system and you're not sure how to do it or where to find it - just check the topic in the index at the end of the book and you get your answers and know-how quickly.

Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Mac companion 23 April 2012
By Woody
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have only just recently made the switch from using Windows for the last 16 years to using Mac OS X Lion and felt a little unsure using Mac Lion. As easy as it is to navigate around Lion I was anxious to find out more about it. I came across this book on Amazon and thought why not give it a try, It does have 930 pages after all.

Now although this book seems quite pricey at first compared to other smaller cheaper guide books it does have a lot more to offer and if you're going to spend money on learning the in's and outs of Lion then the bigger the better in my opinion. I've only been reading this book for just over a week now and have found out things that I may never have stumbled across without it. This book is written very well with clear precise and to the point information (with useful illustrations) that can be read by novices and tech geeks alike.

To me this book has been the best reference resource to help me make the Windows to Mac transition.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's already paid for itself 20 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Every time Apple releases a new operating system, I 'upgrade' to the newest 'Missing Manual'. These books are superb and have saved my life on more than one occasion. The new Lion version has already paid for itself - a software update left my computer struggling (and failing) to boot, but a quick look through the index led me right to the page with the solution. And here's the quick tip to remember: if your Mac won't boot, just hold down the shift key when you press the power button. Sorted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mac OSX Lion Missing Manual 29 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
This purchase was made as a present for my Dad. Saying that, my Dad LOVES it! He has all the previous Mac OS books by David Pogue and raves about each of them. He uses them as handy reference books too. David Pogue is a real fan of all things Mac and his books are a MUST HAVE for all enthusiasts who not only want to own a Mac computer but understand it too! Nice nod to Steve Jobs in opening pages too- without whom there would be no need for a book like this! Enjoy...

I hesitated for sometime before making this purchase. The choice of instructional books is bewildering and vary so much in price however having made the purchase I am more than happy. I am confident that I will be able to find the answer to any future problem I may have. Well done David Pogue the book is written in easy to understand language. And well done Amazon.... excellent service as usual

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK 16 Dec 2011
By CHOUGH
Format:Paperback
This item was delivered quickly and well packaged and, yes, it's a very thick book. I have yet to work through it, but on first glance and being a first time Apple Macbook Pro user, it looks excellent. Well written and easy to understand for beginners and a good reference for more experienced users. It's well illustrated and I believe I'm going to find it a great help. I bought it on the back of buying "The Missing Manual" for my Iphone which was excellent. Buy this with confidence and you won't be disappointed. I believe it's got the edge over "The Dummies" books, although they are also very good and I have used them in the past. Mac computers are completely new to me and this book is exactly what I'm looking for. Well done Amazon again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Manual! 24 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Being new to Macs, I wanted something that would help guide me round the system. This manual works on so many levels. If you want an in-depth analysis you can spend a while working through stuff but if you're just looking for some quick tips or an answer to "how to" then you can do that (usually) quickly and easily. All of this in an easy to read and amusing style - I don't know how this guy gained his knowledge but he's some expert.

The only slight downside I've found is that there's not too much on i-photo - apparently there's another manual by the author on this - surprise!

All in all - well recommended. And aren't Macs wonderful!

No-nonsense comment and assessment on wealth of facilities accessible through Lion. Much easier to find needed solutions (with explanation!) via this MANUAL than via Help feature.
