Product Description

From Amazon.com

Named after the Celtic goddess of inspiration, the duo of Renée Gray and Andrew Fryer that is Ceredwen debuts with a CD that is at once energetic, introspective, and ethereal. Inspired by the mabinogi or oral stories passed down from ancient Celtic tribes, Ceredwen interestingly mesh the modern sounds of keyboards, drum machines, and heavily processed vocals with piano, pennywhistle, and percussion to bring forth a unique, rhythmic brand of Celtic music. Gray sings in Welsh, which gives the songs a timeless flavor, though on some tunes ("Fel Yr Eira" or "Like the Snow") the heavy effects detract from her pretty voice. There are also a few songs that take a little too long in getting going, but overall the album will well please fans of Enigma or modern Celtic music. --Karen Karleski

Review

Enigma and Enya fans will flip for this fantastic marriage of breathy vocals, upbeat rhythms and entrancing airs from the Gaelic singing duo Ceredwen... --New Age Retailer

Enya and Loreena McKennitt fans - be alert!... Ô'r Mabinogi is full of enchanting vocals, infectious rhythms and sparkling instrumental work. Many of the songs are uptempo with a myriad of percussion and rhythms - some may even entice you to get up and dance...This is a release brimming over with originality and musical daring. --Bill Binkelman, Wind and Wire

5.0 out of 5 stars Cymru comes to life again., 10 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: O'r Mabinogi (Audio CD)
A fantastic blend of Celtic and New Age music. This together with the highly elaborated lyrics makes this album a jewel for celtophiles. All songs are based in Celtic myths and are sung in Cymraeg; but the CD comes with the translations, so you don't miss a single word. Dew efo mi (Come with me), we'll cross Porth Annwn.

5.0 out of 5 stars O'r Mabinogi by Ceredwen, 23 Sep 2011

This review is from: O'r Mabinogi (Audio CD)
I discovered these albums by accident courtesy of YouTube and was immediately taken by their amazing melodies and harmonies. Comparisons with Enya and other similar acts are inevitable, but Ceredwen are different in the way the music, voices and words come together in a package that has sufficient Celtic references for fans of Celtic folk, but with a more modern twist in the use of electronic instruments and rhythms at times. The fusion of multi-tracked voices, electronic keyboards and traditional Folk instruments creates a hypnotic, relaxing mix that is never difficult to listen to but which never quite descends into easy "mood music". The messages in the lyrics and the constantly changing rhythms and moods prevent the music becoming background ambient noise

O'r Mabinogi is based on the ancient Welsh legends of the Mabinogion, and the Welsh lyrics refer to some of the stories in the ancient legend cycle. Fortunately for non Welsh speakers, there is a translation of the lyrics in the attractively produced sleeve notes.

Overall, if you like something different, a relaxing, yet not bland sound fusing ancient Celtic rhythms and sounds with a more modern twist, if you like the kind of music the Lord of the Rings films made popular, or enjoy the kind of music often described as "world" by multiple retailers who can't think beyond having to classify everything to suit the 18-30 generation, it might be worth giving Ceredwen a try.

Strange to observe though that Ceredwen's albums are released via an American company and not an indigenous Welsh language music publisher. I for one am glad Real Music of California took the risk and released their two albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, 22 Mar 2002
By AE - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: O'r Mabinogi (Audio CD)
I am really impressed with this CD. I bought it on an impulse, because I really hadn't heard the tracks well enough to make a fair judgement of whether I liked it or not.. but I'm glad I did. I love Celtic music, especially if it has that olde time flavor... this CD doesn't have that flavor, but that doesn't take away from it in the least. I would actually call this "Celtic Trance". The beats are like those that you would hear in a club, but the instruments are genuinly Celtic, and the lyrics are magnificent. I love the sound of Welsh, and when it is written as beautifully as these songs, you can't as for more! The only downfall I can find with this CD is that it is a little "new agey".. I'm not one for Enya and Yanni. Though some tracks on this CD (like #1) resemble them, I still like it, which is saying a lot. To top off the great music, the CD is set in a detailed, colorful, and high-quality case with a long booklet. The lyrics are in Welsh and English, with background Mythology. Its splendid!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enigma meets Enya!, 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: O'r Mabinogi (Audio CD)
This amazing piece of aural soundscapes, sung in Welsh by the sweet-voiced Renee Grey, never strays far from my CD player. The beautiful other-worldly vocals and synthesizer effects combine with laid-back dance-pop beats, lush orchestration and infectious melodies. Fans of Enigma will find themselves on familiar territory here with the dance themes, and Enya fans will love the vocal performance. Also, the track listing on the CD is different from Amazon.com's version...the actual tracklisting is as follows: 1) Porth Annwyn (The Gates of Annwyn) 2) Yng Ngolau Ddydd (In The Light of the Day) 3) Dial Bendigeidfran (The Revenge of Bendigeidfran) 4) Morwyn Y Blodau (Lady of the Flowers) 5) a. TirGwastraff (The Wasteland) b. Cwynfan Pryderi (Pryderi's Lament) 6) Blwyddyn I Heno (A Year From This Night) 7) Teyrnas Y Ser (In The Realm Of The Summer Stars) 8) Fel Yr Fira (Like The Snow) 9) Rhiannon All the songs have vocals save for "Teyrnas Y Ser". Some also take a while to get going. But that does not detract from the whole experience. There is a lengthy booklet that comes with this CD that explains in detail the myths and background information. For a real treat, read the booklet, put this CD into your player and listen to this CD in the dark under headphones. You won't be sorry.

What more can I say. I am an Enigma fan, and love Celtic mythology. This cd is the best blend of both styles I have EVER heard. One listen, and I was hooked. I definitely recommend this cd.
