Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

On Silver and Lead, Phillie poet/vocalist Ursula Rucker’s last album, she recruited neo-soul producers like Jazzanova, 4Hero and Louie Vega to build a bright, warm and funky soundtrack. This time around she drafts in old friend Tim Motzer (King Britt, Musiq Soulchild) and Anthony Tidd aka Quite Sane (Scratch Perverts, The Roots). Rather than wrapping her soliloquies around other people’s sound-signatures, Rucker has ensured that the music is now made to fit her. Using the Egyptian Kemetic principle of truth (Ma’At) as a conceptual hook for the LP she presents deep social analysis in the form of black history (musical, cultural, psychological), sensuality, technology, race, soul, eroticism, love and the higher self. In her velveteen tones she drops songs, asides, raps, poems and diatribes that sometimes sooth and often disturb, but which dance rhythmically through the fragmented forest of sound. More earthy than previous outings, the scent of Africa and bluegrass mingle with the stronger odours of jazz and spatial electronics here, showing Rucker at her revolutionary peak.--Paul Sullivan

I don't like mainstream hip hop music, but had heard of Ursula Rucker from A Guy Called Gerald and 4hero albums and decided to try out one of her solo albums. I wasn't sure at first, but this is one of those albums that really gets under your skin after a few listens and I have now gone back to investigate her earlier albums. This album has such a great sound that compliments Rucker's distinctive vocals and wonderful poetry. Just beware if you are listening to this with others that Black Erotica could be very embarrassing, particularly in front of children or parents (though it is a great song!).

I'd thoroughly recommend this album if you like Ursula's voice having heard it when she's guested on other artists albums.

Her best record to date 13 May 2006
By Scott Woods - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I approached this record with a lot of trepidation. Rucker is always good for a couple of tracks, but overall her albums have been left wanting. Too often she was either outshined by her music or the tracks simply didn't bear repeat listening as either poetry or music. Not to mention that her style launched hundreds of mimics, and some of them so well Rucker risked being outshined by her clones.

"Ma'at Mama" goes a LONG way toward rectifying all of these imbalances.

The tracks here are not only strong, but much better wedded to her vocal arrangments. The music and the poems both are allowed to breathe and stand on their own merits. Of particular note are the tracks "Rant", "Uh Uh" and "Poon Tang Clan" which, while tardemark preachy, exposes a too-rare sense of humor.

Sure, there are some too-familair devices here for a modern poetry record (cue the African drumming, cue the roll call poem), but the hits, for once, far outweigh the misses. A solid record.
WOW WONDERFUL CD 24 Sep 2008
By S. Toms - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Ma'at Mama's CD brought depth and life to the situations of life for African-Americans and women. It gives a lot of HISTORY, ENLIGHTENMENT, and A GREAT CRITIQUE of modern day ills. 5 stars! I love it!
