Intrigue, adventure and a stack load of cash

Rachel White, a young archaeologist, is left a mysterious legacy of £8 million by an old lady she met in Edinburgh when she was a child. Setting off to discover why, she rocks her stable existence and uncovers secrets about her mother's experiences as a 5 year old in a concentration camp in WWII. What made Ma Polinski leave Rachel everything and will what she finds set her and her family free?

From the Author

Intrigue, adventure and a stackload of cash
I decided to write this book when I met a guy who fought in the Resistance during the second world war. The stories he told me made my heart pound and afterwards I began to think about how history can effect your life. I thought it was a really interesting idea and I decided to write this book about it.

Rachel White, the main character inherits £8 million from Ma Polinski and goes off to try to find out why. Her questions have her unearthing skeletons in her own family's closets and chasing ghosts across post war Europe.

I decided to write the book in the first person because I liked the way it made the story very immediate and allowed the reader to really go on Rachel's adventure with her. A lot happens in the book, some of it quite dark and serious, some of it far lighter. Rachel falls in love, fights with her family, goes shopping and discovers some of the skeletons she unearths have very sharp teeth. Once or twice when I was writing it I found myself sitting up in bed at night, wondering what that noise was.

I'm pleased with the story and I did enjoy writing it a lot. I hope you enjoy reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing premise 9 Jun 2012

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in almost one sitting. I know Edinburgh well but haven't lived there for years. This book brings the city to life, indeed all the settings, including Glasgow and Italy are authentic. The characterisations are very good. I can believe the plot, despite the clandestine disinterment of a body. Rachel is seen as separate from her family in many ways. Her familial disinheritance, and then subsequent inheritance from Ma Polinski accentuate this. I wanted to understand more about why Rachel's family treated her the way they did, but I don't feel that this was fully explained. Perhaps it isn't something that can be.

I am not sure what I was expecting based on the title, but it sure wasn't the great story I have just read.
The introspective thought put into how a survivor feels and deals with the aftermath of the Holocaust. I have never given much thought to how it must be for the partner of a survivor if they themselves were never in that situation. Having to live with the memories and the haunting, despite never having lived through them.

The story has us follow the daughter of such a survivor, who inherits from a person she barely knows. This in turn sends her on a search for answers. It shows us the strained relationship the main character has with her parents, their unwillingness to let her go and her need for independance.
The author manages to bring to light the fact that Holocaust denial is rife in our day and age.Unfortunately those that voice these lies are allowed freedom of speech. She allows give us an insight into how these traumatic events follow those that have experienced them and their family members, for many years.
It should never be forgotten.
I do agree that there are some minor typos and some factual research is incorrect. This didn't, for me at least, deter from the fact it was a good story.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a gem !! 19 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Downloaded this as although free I was intrigued by the reviews and background of the story.
I only started reading this last night and couldn't put it down and must admit I ended up having a very late eve !! I really didn't want the story to end, although It has to be said it does end quite quickly which is a shame, however I won't tell the tale as you should read it for yourself but I can guarantee you will still enjoy it.
My only critisism is the 'typos' which did get on my nerves..1 instead of I throughout the book and words joined together or placed where they dont belong, however please don't let that put you off what is in the main a really enjoyable read.
Now looking for my next Sara Sheridan book to get stuck into !!

I downloaded this book because of the blurb but I did not expect the random sprinkling of the 'F' word as though the author felt that she MUST put it in somewhere to be on trend. Read more
