Product Description

Indirecto Records is proud to release a double-live album featuring guitar guru John Scofield and genrebusting improvisational jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood. Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood first recorded together on Scofield's A Go Go (Verve 1998), a project that united the group on material composed by Scofield and interpreted by all four musicians. In 2006, MSMW collaborated again on Out Louder (Indirecto Records), a jam-packed release full or irresistible grooves and spontaneous. Out Louder was a genuine four way collaboration between Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. 'A Go Go was John's record and we were essentially side men, where Out Louder musically comes from all of us,' explains Wood. Scofield adds that much of the material was composed when the foursome 'would play free stuff, listen back, make a song out of it, and then go back with that idea in mind and play free again.' Out Louder exhibits a raw and edgy sound that is embedded in the foundations of jazz, funk and blues. It is described as 'funky, brash and sometimes downright beautiful,' by All About Jazz and Down Beat notes 'the disc serves as a jamming fun time of dance friendly excursions, sonically pleasing FX'd textures and the requisite unpredictable swerves and swoops that MMW typically delivers.' MSMW LIVE: In Case The World Changes Its Mind is a live collection of twelve tracks culled from their 2006 MSMW tour and features music from Scofield's A Go Go and MSNW's Out Louder.

This 2CD set is one of the best things I have heard in 2011, no - for YEARS - and by far the best outing yet from the MSMW aggregation.

As most people reading this will know, John Scofield used MM&W on his 'A Go Go' CD to great acclaim, and the title track of that set is the 1st thing on this furiously funky recording. By track 3, the band is reaching boiling point and it continues in much the same vein throughout, culminating in an absolutely frenzied version of 'Hottentot' on CD2, with drummer Billy Martin pushing things along so hard that even Scofield has to dig deep to keep up. There is almost a slight hint that Sco may be incidental to the action and interplay between the other 3, because they are SO tight...but most of the material is his, and (apparently) they don't play quite the same way without him.

Whatever the case, this is full-on; they even go into a sort of devil-may-care-crash-and-burn on a few tracks, jaw-dropping stuff. 'Miles Behind' is a raw take on the one-chord funk of the '73-'75 Davis band, and 'What Now' and the title track are completely seizing. There is an excellent, strong version of 'Amazing Grace' on CD2....this is better in many ways than the late 1980s band Sco had with Dennis Chambers which became far too technique-oriented; it is far friendlier, more listenable, danceable and more relaxed for a start. It also brings to mind 'Trio Beyond' at times, the Scofield/Goldings/DeJohnette 'tribute' to Lifetime which was itself very successful but nowhere near as funky as this.

If you like Scofield or MMW, this is an immediate must-buy. Martin and Medeski are just incredible!

If you liked the Jam sessions of Derek & the dominos in the 60s and Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 70s, combined with Jimmy Smith's Hammond, this double CD might just be your type of music.
I find Scofield usually a bit too subtile on his jazz guitar, but that is not the case on these redcordings: he rocks without forgetting where he comes from.
The only flaw is 'Amazing Grace', about the only track not penned by the gentlemen.
A real plus is that these are live recordings, making the music just a bit more edgy and - indeed - lively.

So there i was, sitting quietly knitting a very complicated pair of swimming trunks, when a parcel was hurled through my window,i looked up and saw my naked postman sitting on top of the tree opposite flinging parcels and letters into peoples windows "Good morning Cecil ,the lift is not working so i thought i would climb this tree.whilst naked"he shouted"My name is Finbar, not ecil i replied oh they sound similar dont they?"he replied "especially when you are naked,Ethel<goodbye!!"
Medeski,Scofield,Martin and Wood play a storming set on this live album, they start of the whole album with a storming version of Scofields "A go go" which rocks and rolls its way along, followed by another Scofield tune "Deadzy"this is then followed by a band composition called"What now" then the strangely named "Tootle ma is a bingthing" which showcases the immence musician`s`hip in this band.
The next track "Cachaca" features Chris Wood on a truly astounding bass solo which takes you into the realms of such artists as Eberhard Webber or Arild Anderson it is that good!!!!
The title track follows the magnificent opus that is "In case the world changes its mind" a 13 minute epic, great piano playing on this, hammond organ sounds great as well, there is some extraordinary playing by all band members on this track,as there is on the llast track on CD one the self explanetory "Miles behind" a reposte to "miles ahead" i suppose, drums thunderout on this track, floor shattering bass ,this sonds like"Miles runs the voodoo down"which is no bad thing !!!

Endorse all that the previous reviewer says. I have been hoping for a full lenght live concert to be released from this band. Some editions of the 2006 album "Out Louder" come with a "bonus" live CD but this is not much more than 40 minutes long (still worth getting!)
