I have been using MSI motherboards for many years and trust them for being fast, easy to set up, stable, durable and very reliable. Using an old MSI (m-atx)case and a generic 500w power supply my kit included:
MSI Z87M m-ATX motherboard Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Non ECC (2x4GB kit) Intel Core i5 4570, Retail CPU (Socket 1150,3.20GHz,6MB) using its own fan & heat-sink Western Digital 2TB 6Gbps SATA Hard Disk Drive - (WD20EZRX) Green LG ELECTRONICS GH24NS95 LG SATA DVD writer Samsung 24x Retail SATA DVD Writer I added two generic USB port plates, one at the front and another at the back. For networking I used an Edimax USB wireless adapter, and for graphics I used the motherboard's own built in graphics. Operating system: Windows 7 professional, Retail version 64 bit.
The motherboard fitted very easily in the old MSI case. The irritating bits included fitting the power switch and the tiny associated connectors, something that all motherboard and case manufacturers have not attempted to improved over the years. Why?? Another specific irritation in this board was the placement of the internal SATA ports. Bizarre as well as fiddly and irritating. Looks like they expected users to fit their hard disks outside rather than inside the case! Lucky I had an assortment of cables to use.
The system went on straight away, but I had to panic for a while when the boot process seized as none of the drives seem to be recognized. The real shock was when I discovered that the old BIOS was no longer there! It has been replaced by something called UEFI BIOS.
I fiddled with the settings for a while before realizing that it was my aged SATA cables plus the odd placement of the SATA connectors that needed the attention.Read more ›

The first problem was the layout. I had the use the 2nd PCI slot (which is x4) for my graphics card so I could fit in my CPU cooler so I couldn't use my graphics card to my full potential. That's more my fault as I didn't consider the physical size of the card.
The second problem was incompatible RAM. I was using Corsair's 16GB DDR3 low profile RAM. It wouldn't even post - which I thought was strange because usually, the motherboards I run into aren't fussy. This one IS fussy. Very very very fussy. If you purchase it - you are limited to what RAM you can use a lot.
Okay, so I bought some different RAM which was compatible and it booted twice (yay!) and got to the point where it actually found an OS. But then after that - it showed an error code: A2 and wouldn't even get to the BIOS and then it gave up even posting all together. This deterioration happened over about 3 hours so I highly doubt that something suddenly went wrong - especially as I didn't change anything between it booting and not booting.
There is virtually no help if anything goes wrong on this motherboard. There is a guide in it about how to put it all together but that's it. Even responses made by the manufacturer seemed silly because they automatically assume you can get into the BIOS - even when the problem is that you can't!
Stay away from this card. Find a better one. I'm going for a Gigabyte H87-HD3.
