LED lights have suffered a poor reputation in recent years, given the double-blight of hideous prices and low outputs. Having waited about 4 years to finally buy some LED bulbs, I decided to replace just 2 out of 8 in my kitchen ceiling, to see if they were finally up to scratch.

Surprisingly, I can honestly say that these Cree bulbs really do rival 50W halogen bulbs as a viable replacement option. In fact, the only discernable differences are that there is noticeably less glare in your upper eyeline (the lens being ever so slightly recessed within the bulb case) which is good, and the light output is ever so slightly less orangey (or less "warm") than halogens, but not enough to even notice unless you're looking for it.

A quick calculation suggests these bulbs will pay for themselves within 2 years, so needless to say, I've ordered another 6 to replace the rest of the kitchen halogens.

UPDATE AFTER 5 MONTHS OF LIGHT USE:

Rather disappointingly, 2 of these bulbs have now failed. So the cost savings from their supposed long life has just evaporated. Back to 50W halogens.

At 460 to 500 lumens they should probably be more accurately described as equivalent to 35 watt halogens rather than 50 watt. Having bought several for my kitchen that's also what they seem like to me in practice. Having said that, these are great bulbs that give out a nice sharp white light. I would have no hesitation in recommending them. Remember, you also need to change the transformer to a LED specific one if you are replacing halogens or these bulbs will not work properly.

Crap. And will not work on my original transformers. Poor quality and will try to send back. Will not buy any more of these as light output poor compared to others
