Wow...where to begin with this??? Presented uncensored and in original format, this is an intriging mix of complex crime drama and graphic horror.
Multiple personality disorder psycho! A detective, Yosuke Kobayashi, has lots of personalities (most are homicidal!) and whilst investigating a series of gruesome murders, he stumbles upon a bigger mystery...to do with barcodes on your eyeballs! And a wierd cult... He has to deal with his own past, which may be linked to everything...
The art is perfect, sparse, with few tones. The characters can go from looking cute to utterly evil to just insane, and the facial expressions are really freaky. And it is the depictions of the corpses that are amazing, and shocking. And it was these that caused the creator a lot of bother when it was released in Japan in 1997!
This is very violent and sick , very much for mature readers! And the story gets increasingy more complicated through later volumes. I won't go into detail so as not to spoil the suprises (and shocks) that await you. I highly recommend this to horror and crime fans. There are many mysteries to get your head round, and lots of personalities to remember! This will run to 11 volumes! Yay! Check out Miikes' TV series of this too!

I just wanted to lend my support to this series.
`Grrbabs' review echoes my opinion pretty close, i would just like to say that i have read up to Vol.7 of the series and it really is very good.
Sho-u Tajima and Eiji Otsuka have created one of the coolest manga i have ever read with MPD Psycho. The books are produced from high quality materials and are un-flipped (the format for the English Dark Horse versions is practically the same as the Japanese editions).
Not a casual read in manga terms because of the intricate plot, each book is spattered with gore and shocking imagery to rival the best horror fiction out there. Sho-u Tajima's artwork is stunning, with great use of light and shade, he has a semi-realistic style that sets him apart from the usual `big eyes' manga crowd.
The story is complicated, but in a good way, so you want to re-read previous editions to unlock the secrets they contain. Dark Horse have added helpful notes pages in the back of every book to help explain some of the plot points and references to Japanese pop-culture and traditions etc.
I was in Japan recently and it was nice to see all 12 of the series lined up on the shelf in the bookshops, no.12 was being promoted when i was there with prominent displays and posters etc. (strangely Dark Horse only mention 11 books in their release schedule).
I also noted with interest that a comedy parody series has been done called MPD-Psychoco (also written by Otsuka) but drawn in the simple cutesy style of manga, which seems to have as many editions as the original series.
So, if you are after a deliciously dark and exciting manga series, which doesn't spell everything out for you and has some of the best artwork to recently come out of Japan- MPD Psycho is highly recommended!

I knew Otsuka as one of the most brilliant writer in left wings. In fact, when I first saw his book, it's placed just right next to one book written by the Chair of the Japanese Communist Party. Both books were Anti war thing.
I read all of Otsuka's novels and non fiction. He did folklore in college and debut as such.
The differences are too shocking. Novels and Manga are violence, murder and more murder. He writes his non fiction as anti violence view. He didn't believe in the guns or even knives. But in 15th volume of Psycho I see at last.
He writes lot about Pacific war (latest war in most of Japanese's measure) and Kamikaze as critic. Most of Kamikaze were very ordinary boys. Ex-Kamikazes who happen to be lived through war's end are ashamed even now. Thinking they should be died as Kamikaze.
So certain person appeared in 15th volume, who were Kamikaze, do 'Kamikaze' now. Well, I never thought Kamikaze is good thing. But lot of ex's can't forgive themselves. They saw themselves as betrayer to the fellow Kamikaze. So then society critic Otsuka and Manga writer Otsuka become as one person in my mind.
I think Otsuka's best Manga is "Octagonian". It's setting in Japan under GHQ. Will some publisher translate it?
