You can probably tell from the review title, I'm a big fan of this series. Takashi Miike has taken a very long and complex Japanese comic book series and made a six-part serial which, while it doesn't follow the plot of the comic as such, does condense it brilliantly into six episodes. If anything, Miike's bizarre cinematography and stylish post-production and editing make this a more stylish and interesting experience than the comic book.

The plot is very difficult to describe without giving away the various twists in the tale, but basically the story follows detective Amamiya Kazuhiko as he investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders linked only by the barcodes tatooed under the eyelids of the victims. The story is initially very puzzling but does reward perseverance as, by the end of the last episode, you are told exactly what is happening.

MPD (Multiple personality detective) Psycho is a fantastic-looking, stylish, clever and well-made piece of film that is puzzling enough to keep you coming back for more but not so obtuse that you give up in disgust. It has strong elements of science-fiction and horror that stands it apart from the average detective thriller. Buy this, and you too can discover...who is Lucy Monostone?

Please please, if you loved Ichi the killer, this is another sick little gem from Takashi Miike. It is a series based around a `cult' that spawned a character that can possess anyone who is a `bar-coder'. It is complex and brilliant. People are like machines, when `infected' with the virus they feel compelled to commit acts of great violence. There is another virus character that also makes people do odd things like steak unborn babies from mothers stomachs. The virus is far reaching when government official's being involved. The cops investigating are weird and wacky, the lead detective is a proven schizophrenic with split personalities. Sadly I bought the set that was censored, the scenes where a telephone had been placed in an eviscerated mother's stomach, the scene where a school girl had a flower planted in her skull with her brain exposed. You can get it now without the super gross stuff blocked out. This is harsh stuff indeed, the main detective gets his wife delivered alive to him in a box!! Her arms and legs amputated and breathing mask in place. One sick young man decides to play bingo with a group of young men, each number called equates to a body part that is cut off, numbered and then scattered in a field.

I mean, the mind boggles at what has been created in this series and much applause to Takashi Miike for giving the things in his head an on screen presence.

I wouldn't lend it your parents, they might decide there is something wrong with you. This box set is very worthwhile the price tag. It is incredibly re-watchable and engaging. You can shake your head with dis-belief but it is there on the screen, it is the strange made real.

So yeah, it's confusing as all Hell. I watched it with my girlfriend and, thankfully, she picked up on a whole bunch of stuff I didn't so we managed to piece the plot together. It's a ridiculously interesting series visually; there're little animé bits, and the rain is ridiculously kewl. That said, some of the CGI... Ahem... leaves something to be desired.

One of the best things about Miike films is how well he can incorporate humour; this, like Ichi The Killer and Visitor Q, occasionally throws something downright ridiculous into an otherwise uncomfortable sequence of events and just creates perfect comedy. He really does make it work perfectly.

But anyway. The reason you should buy this is simple; the storyline, however convoluted it may be, is absolutely gripping and, once you've immersed yourself into the MPD Psycho world, has you getting through the whole series in an alarmingly small amount of time.
