MOTH TO THE FLAME - just don't get too close

Storyline:

Glasgow police are trying to solve the murder of two women. Evidence includes a computer hard drive the police believe belongs to the man who strangled them. While the main police in Glasgow (led by Detective Chief Inspector McGrath) do their part in solving the crime, the police CCD (Computer Crime Department), headed by Detective Chief Inspector Eustace Silver, have to find out what they can about the computer evidence. Silver hires Guy Hunter, a freelance cyber sleuth, to help with the investigation which causes the killer to target Hunter too.

Guy Hunter discovers that the HERO computer in Glasgow (which is the police's main source of intelligence and information) has been compromised. The murderer has hacked into the system and is altering the data to cover his crimes. He plans to kill three young women as proof that he can literally get away with murder. He then intends to sell this ability to high powered criminals willing pay a lot of money to have their crime evidence altered.

The premise and crimes are underpinned by Guy Hunter's unrequited love for police psychologist, Laura Gray. There's also the beautiful and mysterious young woman, Helen Rain, who works for the CCD, a woman without a past, whose future lies with Eustace Silver. And detectives Elysia Del Rio and Jay Juno.

In Moth to the Flame, the crimes are secondary to the interplay between the main characters - their lives, love, friendship and loyalty to each other.

This is a fictional story. The main character, Guy Hunter, is a cyber sleuth, specialising in computer crime, with a love for reading Shakespeare. He works freelance for the police CCD in Glasgow, Scotland.

Guy is single, a modern classic man, in his early 30s. He lives in a waterfront apartment overlooking the River Clyde in Glasgow, and has an office in the Merchant City. Hunter is also a moth to the flame - invariably tempted by something dangerously attractive that could lead to his downfall.

A fairly predictable ending. Rambled a little in middle, lost it's way somewhat, but not bad at all for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Enjoyable 24 Jan. 2012

When I downloaded 'Moth to the Flame' I failed to note that it is a script book. I was unsure as to whether I would enjoy reading a story in script form. As it turns out though I enjoyed it very much...perhaps more than a regularly formatted book.
I like how the script form moved the story along and eliminated superfluous content. I will definitely be looking into reading more of this type of story.
The book itself is well written and interesting. I highly recommend this for a good, cozy afternoon read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, but restrained, read 20 Oct. 2011
By James Blakley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Author De-Ann Black's screenplay "Moth To The Flame" is a well-written, if by-the-numbers, crime story with a relatively bloodless, easy-to-follow plot.

It has one rather unique element working for it--its leading man, aptly-named Guy Hunter. By American standards, Hunter's the anti-P.I.: A well-dressed, mild-mannered 30-something who doesn't booze or berate and seems betrothed to The Bard (instead of a beautiful lady). And he lives in a swank, scenic part of Glasgow, Scotland. Though Hunter does show a bit of world weariness as he reluctantly returns to the local police's Computer Crime Department to help stop a serial killer. And while on the job, Hunter carries on with considerable calm and restraint. Another Gregory Peck, for those Hollywood-casting from home.

And that leads to a problem with the story. Restraint. There seems to be a little too much of it for a thriller. While Black does a good job of creating some blind alleys and tossing a red herring or two to lead the reader off the trail, there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency to catch the killer. There are the requisite dark shadows, chases, and POV of the killer watching Hunter from afar; but no real insight into the villian--no fearsome personality to stop. Even Glasgow itself doesn't seem quite paralyzed with fear.

Amnesic Helen Rain, the supposed heroine, is rather unremarkable. While physically captivating--and possibly the key to capturing the killer--there isn't much attachment or chemistry between Hunter and Rain; which keeps Hunter true to his unspoken code--and to the task at hand--but creates little romantic tension or subplot to add to the adverstised thriller element. Police psychologist Laura Gray, the one Hunter let get away, would make for ideal thriller fodder, with Hunter sparing no expense to save her; and she, dispensing psychological insights to an audience salivating for morsels on the murdering mindset.

"Moth To The Flame" would make for nice TV fare. With its relatively unknown, but charming, Glasgow backdrop there is plenty of untapped potential to lure an audience. But the overall lack of urgency and a compelling supporting cast will probably keep it from becoming a motion picture--State-side anyway, where the standards for sleuth stories are decidedly more cynical, sensual, and violent (to match increasingly cynical, sensual, and violent cinematic settings).
