More About the Author

Essays at school in any subject were always a joy, and maths a drudge, so it pointed in the right direction when an essay or poem was published in the school magazine at the age of 14 or so.

Always a keen reader and writer, and with an interest in offset litho printing, the opportunity presented itself in 1979 to write and produce a fanzine for the rock band, Motorhead. It was the punk era, fanzines were trendy, a printing machine was available, an introduction to the band was made and we have never looked back. Now, in 2010, I have the pleasure of saying that I have been running the Motorheadbangers Fan Club for 30 years, with almost 90 fanzines to my credit.

But going back a little, or perhaps quite a lot, Manchester based Babylon Books approached in 1980 for a book about the band, and this was published as 'Motorhead' in 1981.

In 1993, contact was made with a Canadian publisher, and 'The Illustrated Collector's Guide To Motorhead' was in the shops in 1993.

Writing personal essays and stories, and also for and about Motorhead, was a valuable apprenticeship, and where I paid my dues. Written in 1999 / 2000, 'The Message' is a thinly disguised Jill Dando murder crime thriller. Don't ask me how, but from the minute her murder was announced, I was convinced that a hit-man was responsible; and it turned out to be true. 'The Message' was expanded before Barry George's release, and re-published as 'A Conspiracy Of Silence.'

With quite a few manuscripts already on file, and others written at the time, another 11 books followed; 7 crime thriller fiction, one fantasy, one home front war fiction, and two Sci-Fi.

Another Motorhead book, which reprinted the text only from the first 15 fanzines, was published in 2002 as 'Diary Of The Fans Volume 1.' This has been made available again in 2011 on Amazon, as a download.

After writing some essays and humorous poetry for a local magazine, I sent them, along with some local photos and postcards, to a local interest publisher, leading to the 2008 book titled 'When Upton Had Trains.'

After writing a resume / memoir of post war life, and the difficulty in trying to convince parents and grandparents that rock 'n' roll was worthwhile; plus short reviews of the bands that I went to see in the area between 1960 and 1980, 'Bournemouth Rocks!' was published in 2009, as a unique look at the local music scene.

In 2010, 2 new thrillers, titled 'When The Clouds Have Passed,' and 'Thunder In A Bottle,' were published. Also, a non-fiction title, 'Put That Fag Out!' which is, of course, a stop smoking book. The hints and tips helped me when the faith and integrity in patches and gum stopped, and there was nothing on the market to take their place.

2011 / 2012 will see another local interest book, published by Natula, about the long-forgotten Dorset brick and clay industry. Mainly focussing on the town of Upton, and the clay drainage pipe and brick industries now erased from the landscape, they are remembered with text, OS maps, and photos from the early 1950's to the mid-1970's.

The recent invitation by Amazon to upload digital books to their site, prompted me to re-publish my out-of-print back catalogue of 12 titles. This, I am most grateful for, as those books were just sitting there doing nothing. It takes untold hours in writing a novel, and Amazon gave the opportunity to have those stories not only available again in their listings, but also living and breathing once more.

Three new titles have also been added as digital books: 'Within Spitting Distance,' which is a previously unpublished crime thriller, written in 2005, about a detective who is within spitting distance of retiring, when a speight of murders take place to bog down his final weeks on the force.

Also, 2 more Local Interest books, 'Long-Forgotten Facts About Upton & Poole In Dorset,' which is another mixture of humorous poetry, with short essays, detailing some of the factual events which took place in the area; and 'Rock 'n' Roll Ink,' which is a collection of over 100 live gig reviews from the Poole area, written from 2005 onwards, for the Mr. Kyps venue.

2012 will see the Cleopatra Books publication of 'Live To Win,' a brand new Motorhead biography. A blaze of colour and photos on every page, it is the full story, with a wealth of information which has only come to light during its writing; and a raft of previously unpublished and rare live pictures of the Lemmy KIlmister, Larry Wallis, Lucas Fox first line-up.

At the end of January 2012, 'When The Clouds Have Passed' was re-titled to 'Murder In The Village' and given a new cover photo. In early May, the book achieved #5 in Amazon's British Detective Story chart, and stayed in the Top 10 for 3 weeks.

Read the Amazon book description and believe every word. This really is the ultimate book about Motorhead, written by Alan Burridge, the man who has lived and breathed Motorhead for oh so many years. Alan has been involved with the band for more years than any band member, other than Lemmy.
It's not the first book that Alan has written about Motorhead, but it is the best by a long way. It's packed with information, presented in a very readable style and with lots of very high quality photos, plus a few taken by friends and fans in the pre-digital age. I have been a fan of Motorhead since their first gig, at the Roundhouse in 1975, but this book has told me things I didn't know and shown me lots of photos I'd never before seen.
The book itself is of the highest quality, printed on good quality gloss paper and well bound. It even has the cover design embossed. Most impressive!
It may seem expensive, but you get what you pay for and with this book you get a book to be proud of.
Just one word of warning. It's very heavy, so try not to drop it on your toe.

Just finished reading this..while a very enjoyable history of the band and with some great photos..there are some very annoying mistakes which should not be made by someone who has ran the Motorhead fanclub for over 30 years..eg page 90...Motorhead did NOT headline the Donington festival in '86..they played halfway down the bill below Ozzy, Scorpions and Def Leppard! page 157.Inferno-'...produced once more by the exceptional Cameron Webb' implying that he had produced previous Motorhead albums...Inferno was the FIRST Motorhead album produced by Cameron Webb. There are also a number of mistakes in listing tour dates..eg 1980 beginning tour in Ireland feb 3rd..this tour began in Belfast on feb 7th.2004..Belfast date was Nov 6th..not Nov 3rd. I should know..I worked local crew on this gig.2008..Dublin was Nov 1st not Oct 31st...nor is Dublin part of the UK..quote 'Motorhead began their uk tour in Dublin' page168. There are also a number of typing mistakes throughout the book. Sorry if this all seems trivial but after shelling out over forty quid for this book on my favourite band, I would expect a higher quality of writing.

This book is the best book out there about the band Motorhead.
It gives an incredibly precise and complete description of the band from the beginning and up to today. The leader of the official motorhead fan-club "motorheadbangers" Mr. Alan Burridge is the author behind the book, and his genuine interest of the band becomes quite clear when you read "Live to Win". His knowledge is just outstanding!

The pictures on every page is fantastic and this brings the book to a higher level when reading. It's quite funny to see the pictures of the band-members from late 70's and early 80's, and if you have been following the band for some time you will have some fantastic time down memory lane!

As a Motorhead-fan, this is a product that i can't begin to explain how much i recommend it. Even for people who is just interrested in rock 'n' roll- this is a book that should be in the book shelf of eveyone!

I have in my trembling hands my very own copy of this precious lump of image intensive pages! Live To Win by Alan Burridge might be well be the most definitive collection of Motörhead memories that you are ever likely to see. It is is a weighty tome of some quality and for the Motörhead fan a veritable thrill ride of visual history. I'm delighted with it, make no mistake this is quite obviously a labour of love by Professör Motörhead himeself, Alan Burridge but as Motörheadbangers we can all bask in this

If you are in anyway excited by rock music culture and in particular Motörhead's history of extraordinary magnitude then celebrate with this. An old cliché but if there is one book about the band you are ever likely to indulge in, this is it. In a world of throwaway degradation this piece of magnificent memorabilia will outlive us all.

Live to Win!

Alan Burridge has just written the definitive book on Motorhead. This book looks great with it's silver warpig and red Motorhead logo and is illustrated throughout with some of the best photos that I've ever seen of the band. Being a Motorhead fan since 1980 I thought that I knew pretty much everything that there is to know about the band but there is plenty here to keep the hardcore fan busy. Alan runs the Motorheadbangers fans club (which I am a proud member of) so it was best that he wrote this book as he has the knowledge and expertise to chart the bands history year by year. It's a style that works really well and it's a good way of reminiscing as you recall all the tours and excellent albums that the band have done over the years. Highly recommend this book - even to the causal Motorhead fan - this one is a must have!

This book is a superb and detailed history of Motörhead, written by 'Mr Motörhead' himself Alan Burridge. It is packed with high quality photographs. The book is incredibly well researched and full of little known facts, charting the struggles faced by the band in the early days and the career highs and lows. The fact that Motörhead are still a going concern today after almost 40 years, is testament to the belief and vision of Lemmy and his uncompromising view that he will play what he wants. Mr Burridge is the only real 'super fan' and he has compiled a superb book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and recommend it anyone with even a passing interest in Motörhead.
