Too much and therefore too little, 16 Sep 2010
This review is from: The MMM Really Useful Motorhome Book (Paperback)
I'm sorry I don't agree with the title of this book. I did not find it very useful. The main problem is I think that the author wanted to cover too many subjects in too few pages. The result is incomplete and one-sided information. Two examples. In the 'Motorhome base vehicles' section the Fiat/Peugeots are dealt with. Regular MMM readers will know that these vehicles showed serious gearbox and clutch problems during the past years, and not very forthcoming importers and manufacturers. This is vital information that should have been mentioned in a book like this. The other example is in the European Country Guide section. Living in the Netherlands I burst out laughing when I discovered that the book hardly gets any further than cliché Amsterdam and a picture of a windmill in the Keukenhof Gardens. Why the city of Groningen is mentioned as an alternative is not made clear. Why at least not mention the lovely green areas of the Veluwe (Centre of the Netherlands), de Achterhoek (Eastern part), Friesland and, yes, the rural province of Groningen (both in the North)?
My point is, if you happen to know a few things and you discover that a book leaves to be desired on those points you start wondering: what about the rest of the book?

Excellent introduction to a complex hobby., 26 April 2011
This review is from: The MMM Really Useful Motorhome Book (Paperback)
Presented in 2 parts, firstly about buying a Motorhome, and then about using and enjoying it, this is an excellent introduction to many of the subjects that should be understood when considering owning such a vehicle. After suggesting topics for thought, this gives light coverage of each area in a way that enables you to work out which further questions you would like to ask, and then raises awareness so that you can work out where to look for the answers, including useful website recommendations.
Some of the topics are more likely to be needed straight away, whilst others probably won't be approached until after some motorhoming experience. However, in the manner of the presentation, as you come to approach each issue covered, the book would once again be a useful place to start, so it is likely to remain on the bookshelf as a useful source of reference for a long time after any initial read. Note though that experienced motorhomers might already be familiar with most of the coverage of the book, so it is likely to be far more useful to newcomers to the past-time.
If I had one quibble with the book, it's that the sections on Gas Systems, Motorhome Electrics, & Troubleshooting are very technical, and could put some people off. This is especially true as, if any of the relevant issues were to arise, it would probably be better initially to take the vehicle to an approved service centre. Overall though, it is a very readable book, with good quality magazine feel pages, colour photos, and travel advice for the UK and Europe.
