Book Description

28 April 2011
The second book in the Jack Nightingale supernatural thriller series.

Jack Nightingale found it hard enough to save lives when he was a cop. Now he needs to save a soul - his sister's. But to save her he has to find her and they've been separated since birth.

When everyone Jack talks to about his sister dies horribly, he realises that someone, or something, is determined to keep them apart.

If he's going to save his sister, he's going to have to do what he does best - negotiate. But any negotiation with the forces of darkness comes at a terrible price. And first Jack must ask himself the question: is every soul worth saving?

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced horror sequel 23 Jan 2011
By N. Brett TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Less of a follow on from "Nightfall" - more of a continuation and I would recommend reading Nightfall first.

As with the previous book I was not as bowled over as I usually am with the author's works but I suspect he is having a little fun with these and adopting a slightly different style of writing. This is very fast paced with a low level of characterisation and a lightish approach to evil! It avoids true horror with the usual unpleasantness and detail while still dealing with the Devil's minions and humans with very dark hearts.

I think the author wants to have fun and wants you to join him and it just about works - a good lead character (and faithful assistant) and some realism in the way the Police do investigate the way that death seems to follow him around. The weakness is that nothing major is resolved and it is very much like the previous book - I suspect this is the one story told over three books but we will have to wait for the next one to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Leather Book to Date 21 May 2011
By Jake
Format:Kindle Edition
With the first of the Nightingale series, Nightfall, Stephen Leather has outdone himself in writing talent. If you enjoyed any or all of his previous books, Nightfall will grab your attention and make you turn page-after-page without stopping to see what's going to happen next.
This is very different from the Spider Shepherd series in that Nightingale is a private detective who used to be a cop and now he finds himself involved in cases where supernatural things can and do happen.
Definitely a plus for die-hard Stephen Leather readers.

This is the book following on from Nightfall where Jack finds out who his father was and what happened at his birth.

Jack Nightingale, private investigator, is looking for his sister to stop her from meeting the fate that their father gave them from birth. It is a fast paced good read, that keeps you wanting to know more. This book (and the previous) involves demons and rituals.

Why do the people in his life keeping killing themselves? who is the devil behind that one? when is the killer going to come after Jack? He has saved his sisters soul this time... but is he going to be in time before the next fatality happens?

I have read may genres of books but This series is a mixture of supernatural and detective and its great to combine these it works very well. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait until the next one... does Jack ever have a love life? Where is his sister now? Can Jack get to her in time? who knows... only time will tell. Bring on another book in this series please..... soon....

A credit to Stephen Leather.

first in the series is... Nightfall buy them both if you have not alreadyyou wont regret it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Leather Lite 28 Feb 2011
By J. Potter TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Typically when you buy a book written by Stephen Leather you will find inside a story that is well plotted, excellently characterised and even a little moral. It will entertain you.

Midnight is the second in a trilogy of books featuring Jack Nightingale, a one time Police negotiator now making a living as a private detective after he allegedly threw a paedophile out of a very high window. In the first book he discovered his soul had been sold to a devil prior to his birth. Through various deliberations about the merits of devils, the existence of god and all things spiritual, mixed with bizarre and random deaths straight out of the Omen movies he managed to make it through to book two.

Which is about Jack's attempts to save his sister's soul when he discovers it was sold to a devil before she was born. Jack negotiates the various symantics around the existence of devils and therefore gods and a number of sudden and strange deaths straight out of the Omen movies. All the while trying to identify his sister and save her soul.

So when this book is advertised as Nightingale v2 it really does feel like the first book rewritten. And as with any book that gets a second pass this is a little better than the first. The real shining star in all this is the Jenny character who you feel really must have a big part to play in the final book. She is well educated, intelligent, the daughter of a insanely rich family and extremely connected. Why she is actually Jack's assistant is the main reason I kept reading through this. She and Jack have a great chemistry despite no attempts by Leather to create chemistry, he simply puts them in situations where you are desperate for something to happen.
