I've had this album since December 2009, having bought a pre-release copy at a concert I went to, where Sandi was the support act. This version of the album was missing the single This Ol' World featuring Joe Bonamassa, which I've since purchased.

I bought the album simply on the strength of Sandi's performance of some of the material at the concert, and I'm glad that I did. The album is bluesy and demonstrates Sandi's immense vocal talents. This is a back to basics affair, where the songs are simple and stripped down for the most part, and a mile away from Sandi's previous, more pop orientated releases. There are a couple of very decent 'rock' tracks on the album too.

All in all, this is an absolutely astounding album, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone looking for something brilliantly simple and simply brilliant. I will be buying the official release of this album, to add to my music collection. There isn't a bad track on the album (in my opinion) and I've been listening to it pretty much every week for the last 5 months and it still sounds every bit as good as it did the first time I played it through. If this is the shape of things to come, I can't wait for the next album.

Thank you Sandi, for sharing this with everyone.

Knowing Sandi Thom's music mainly for her chart (and debut) hit single 'I Wish I Were a Punk Rocker', which I always thought was a reasonable song but not outstanding, I was very surprised and delighted when I caught her live (as part of a bigger line up) and found she was playing this great Blues and Rock music. Immediately I went home and looked up details of her music and found that this album 'Merchants and Thieves' was due out shortly and it was a bit of a change of direction for her in that it was a mainly blues based album. Since then I caught Sandi live for her full show and subsequently bought the new album as soon as it came out.
So far I have to put this down as my favorite new album of the year (2010). The album is strongly blues based although you will also find hints of country, rock, folk and soul music on it. There are many highlights on the album, most notably for me the strong blues songs of 'Belly of The Blues', 'This Ol World' (featuring Joe Bonamassa) and the driving rock of 'Runaway Train' (which is just fantastic in her live shows).
If you like Blues music, I can't recommend this enough, and even if you like Sandi's old stuff, you will still find enough in this to satisfy you. All I will say to anyone if you have written Sandi Thom of as a one hit pop song wonder, then think again and have a listen to this. And if she is playing live anywhere near you get out and see her, you won't be disappointed.

her worst album 17 May 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having already brought and loved her first two albums. I found the songs on this album to the very poor and not what I would expect from Sandi Thom based on her first two albums.

I would not want to purchase any further albums if this the standard to songs she releases.

Just short of five stars
Sandi's voice is so outstanding it seems churlish to criticise. It's only the material that lets her down. Read more

Very good, bluesy album
I bought it after seeing Sandi & her band do a storming gig, and, unlike many post-gig purchases, it didn't disappoint. Read more

Love Sandie's re-invention, hope next album contains blues material. Wise choice to have Joe Bonassa on this album
