These books have a tough expectation list as people want them to provide all they need to know to get through the associated examination and be a first class refernce book. The five-star rating applies to the former of these requirements as this is the market the book is aimed at. Having sat the examination I can say that all of the questions were answered in the book - and from previous exposure to these books that is not normally the case.

As a reference book it fails, simply because it is not intended as such and more obviously because to cover all the topics adequately it would have to be five times as long. That said, the section on Service Broker is way too vague - the knowledge it imparts will get you through the examination but will leave you floundering in the real world.

Use the book to pass the exam and to introduce you to the new technologies - look elsewhere for more in-depth practical (i.e real world) material.

This is my first Microsoft Press textbook/training kit for an exam - and this is exactly what is focuses on - getting you through the exam.

It's very dry (and rather boring), and I much preferred reading the Wrox books Beginning SQL Server 2005 Administration, and then Professional SQL Server 2005 Administration (which appear to be comprehensive as well as being more readable).

Still, this book comes with a CD for 180 trial licence for SQL Server 2005 - and a Measure Up CD with exam simulation software.

This book covers all of the 70-431 topics in just about as much detail as you need for the exam without over complicating matters. It also comes with 450 questions which is really useful in testing your knowledge. The explanations are in easy to understand english, with the possible exception of HHTP endpoints which could be done with abit more clarity. On the whole an excellent guide for the exam

I found this book is quite hard to follow. This is my very first SQL server book, and I was lost just in the first couple of the lessons. The author probably expected the readers to have a good knowledge about the system already, so there are not enough screen shots to guide you.

By Steven R. McEvoy TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 6 July 2009

This book was a team effort from the Solid Quality Learning team. The authors include: Daren Bieniek, Randy Dyess, Mike Hotek, Javier Loria, Adam Machanic, Antonia Soto and Adolfo Wiernik. In my experience, sometimes group projects like that fail because of too many hands in the pot. Not in this case. This book is excellently written. The Self-Paced Training Kits (SPTK), are designed for just that - for a person to be able to buy it, and work through the material, either to prepare for the certification exam, or because they want to deepen their knowledge of a product, to either be more proficient in their job or to advance their career. This book will help reach all of those objectives and more. At nearly a thousand pages it is chock full of information to absorb; fortunately it is structured in such a way as to make that possible.

Each chapter begins with a brief introduction of the concepts to be covered. Each concept has its own section. Then there is a great lesson Summary to review and highlight the objectives of the chapters and what you should now know. Then there is a written review, both theoretical questions and practical case studies. The software on the student CD, has self tests, that can be used for chapter review of certification prep. They can be used both in a learning mode or exam mode.

This book was used in the Microsoft academy that I attended. It is a great resource that I am sure to reference for years to come.

This was used in preparation for a Microsoft exam; and it covered all of the items that appeared in the actual test. It is well structured, well written and provides the right information to help you get your certification.

I did also find quite a bit of information that has helped us to set-up our SQL servers and created the appropriate backup and management routines. We have very few issues now with our SQL server so I would suggest that book has more than paid for itself!

It is a large work which reflects the product; it is not a light read! But certainly worth keeping for future refrence as well.
