I bought this book because 1)I have absolutely ZERO experience with Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2)I have used Sybex books in the past to help me gain knowledge of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, of which I have passed all exams.
However, with this book I am very dissappointed. Examples are imcomplete, not clear and generally leave the reader hanging as to what to do next. More often than not, when working my way through the excercises I have to go to the SQL page on the Microsoft website and try and find the information that was left out of the book. It's a tremendous waste of time and very frustrating. If the authors of this book want to assume that every reader out there already has knowledge of how SQL server is installed and administered, then they should be writing handbooks and pocket guides for existing IT administrators and engineers.
Like many people out there who are working on a certification, I bought this book to learn the ins-and-outs of SQL installation and administration. As such, I need to understand every step as much as possible. Unfortunately both the authors and Sybex have failed me this time.
