Format: Paperback
This book, in addition to being the perfect companion tome to take (and pass!) the 70-685 Exam, is also a very well written book in its own right, being well structured, cohesive and informative - though hardly a page turner, it is interesting to read.

The book takes you through Troubleshooting Hardware, Networking, Printers, Security, Protecting Client Systems (malware is well addressed here), Access Conditions (dealing well with VPNs), Updates, Performance, finally Troubleshooting Software Issues.

For the amount of quality information here, even ignoring its relevance for the exam, this is essential for anybody who ever has to deal with supporting Windows 7 environments.

Without doubt one of the best MCTS Training Kit books available and when used with the 70-680 MCTS training kit will provide both invaluable reference and study material for the associated exams and a very useful reference book for future projects. The appendices in the 685 book are packed with great references and command line tools as well as diagnostic and troubleshooting methods for most desktop support situations. With very well laid out technical concepts and supporting labs - which have been well researched and require the minimum of setup - I would highly recommend this to anybody involved in supporting Windows 7 clients.

Since my employer isn't much these days for paying for my training, this is a cheap way to do it, though I suspect that you really need to have some prior experience (I've done various MCP exams in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, for example) if you want to go down this route. No guarantees but it could be one way of getting your Windows 7 credentials. I'll know more at the end!

This book may well of been on the money when it was published but the exam has no doubt been revised and moved on since then. So I have to agree with the other reviews to some extent, the practise questions on the cd-rom are dated and will not prepare you for the style of the exam questioning (no case studies for a start)!!.

The references on the practise questions do not match up with the chapters in the actual book??.... Lacking in depth information and practise exercises on command line commands and syntax, I found that two areas of the syllabus were lacking (support for mobile users and managing & maintaining win 7 systems).

I would recommend this book but make sure you use other resources and materials before you sit the exam. I recently sat the exam and scored in the 600's pass mark 700... ( Past 12 months I have recently passed A+, N+, 4 MTA's, 70-680 & CCNA all first time so I trust that my own study methods are working but I feel let down by this book, simply put it does not cover everything on the exam)

Could it just be a sales strategy by the author so students buy their other books??!!

The book is written well. But lacks real depth on what i have found to be important for the exam.
It's out of date and written in a lazy fashion. Also the practice exams are out of date. some questions are even from the 70-680 exam which i recently passed.

And other questions are not covered in the book or wrong. As it tells you which chapter the question covers and the answer in the book is different from the one in the practice exam. Which is very poor. hoping now i have studied enough to pass next week.
