Frustrating reading 4 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I've found this book to be annoying and very frustrating to use.
As an experienced programmer (not in .NET) I was hoping for a book that would explain new concepts and then demonstrate them in a real world code example. Unfortunately, most of the examples in the book are just snippets of what you need to really be able to see the full concept in action. For example, a lot of the code examples use an assumed class of "widget". Seeing that I would more than likely refer to this book to look for coding examples, I would much rather see actual examples of data types and how they are used in a real world situations than assumed garbage that only serve to make the author look like a pompous know-it-all.
Another frustration is the list type way that the author uses to inform the reader about new procedures and methods. I'd have prefered a few hundred more pages showing proper examples of code instead of chapters full of this is how to do a, this is how to do b, this is how to do c etc.
Overall, most things are covered but not in-depth enough and all too often just skimmed over.
I would have liked more exercises to reinforce the material as seeing how something works is how I learn, not by the method this book uses which as I've said is mostly a list.

Bought the book specifically to pass the 70-306 exam. I had solid VB6 experience, a smidgen of Java, but no .NET experience at all. I read it from cover to cover and did perhaps 60% of the code labs (mostly the labs in the large ADO section). I used the supplied test exam to gauge my weaknesses and browsed the MSDN to pick up extra details. Bought the Microsoft ADO.NET book 2 days prior to the exam to brush up on ADO.

By itself, the book has just enough information to pass the exam (maybe 80% of the exam is covered) as long as you read and learn ALL of it, especially the deceptively thin deployment and security sections. It's not a great book, or a thorough book, but it does the job! I passed the exam after 3 weeks studying 3-4 hours a day.

Pretty good 17 Aug 2002
Format:Paperback
Used book as main study guide for 70-306 and passed. At first I was worried that it didn't seem to cover everything, but then I realized that .Net is so vast, that no single book could do that. As it turned out, it was perfect for the exam, giving a very good idea of the areas which would be covered and how much emphasis would be paid to each topic. Unlike previous books, it does not waste too much time with the basics, but provides mostly very good examples, through there are areas which are not covered in the proper depth.
Knocking it down to 4 stars, because of a small number of non-critical errors (first one found on page 4) and the failure to give more cross-references to locations where more complete examples could be found. To do any serious coding, you would need more detailed sources.
This book is not for somebody to learn the language from, but rather for somebody already familiar with .Net. Apart from the Exam slant, it is also is a good idea's book, in that it covers such a wide area of topics and expertise. First time I read it, I came away with a long list of things which I wanted to try in my current program.
This book gives a very good idea of the differences between C# and VB.Net. It's surprising, on how many lines of code, the only difference is the semi-colon at the end.
