5.0 out of 5 stars Maxwells Point, 28 Jul 2009

I think this is one of the best Mad Max books so far. As well as Max's school life I can relate to Metternich the delinquent cat, as I own one too. All of the Max books are enjoyable and compulsive reads.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing much changes, 26 Jun 2007
You will get some good reading and a bit of suspense worth the action. For this I rate three stars.

Maxwell again is confronted with a lot of murder that is somehow connected with the defeat of King Philip's great armada. Two hell hounds are on his trail and one of them succeeds in bringing the "great man" (whatever that is) down albeit only temporarily.
As always he is struggling to complete his toy army the light brigade that is.
Another threat comes from one of his best-loved enemies in school. Henry Hall is on his knees again but pays his debts to the last penny.
Again Maxwell has to answer a trial...but don't be afraid. The great man is towering high above us fellow citizens in ethic standards, wit and body language. The trial turns out to be a piece of cake.

Again a lot of titles are beeing served for those who know. Thus we learn about a constant gardener who - now would you believe it - knows that "in situ" is preferable to "right there" (sic!) also Alice "don't" live here anymore and, and, and. Some Spanish and even some German is thrown at us. Those who know Maxwell don't expect a more up to date choice of words.
So, nothing new in that.

I did like the "instant marxist" part. Truth be told: "lumpenproletariat" never was a lot to get organized in unions let alone parties though. This honour belongs solely to the proletariat. Someone as smartarsed and pompous as Maxwell would likely hand down a star for this lapsus. But let's not be sticklers for historical correctness in crime fiction.

Even though I have to admit the story in itself is well laid out and told with some craftsmanship I have to take into account that the continous flow of "know it all" remarks along with a lot of rude europhobic tendencies for good measure is disturbing (disgusting would be more like it) and does neither improve the plot nor does it help in any other way. So that's one star less.
